Thanks, Ambro, for sharing these with us. The Mikro Summar seems to be a tad sharper. On that shot the exposure seems to be a tad more even too.
What kind of shutter do these cameras have? Focal plane, of course ... but then? Can the slit be altered?
Leica should introduce a Mikro Summar 42mm for the modern user!
Erik.
FWIW you still find these lenses on eBay etc for a price. Wondering what was Leitz, 42mm and called "Summar" I searched ages ago and found it was a microscope part...

Both camera have an 8mm wide fixed slit. The lens is capped while winding on. As built, as an Attrape non-working display, much inside needs to be changed, production variations sometimes make this difficult. The supplied lens is useless, the shutter supplied doesn’t cover right....but with perseverance, or $$$$ to Mr Kim, the camera Leitz built as a display can actually function exactly the same as it did for Barnack. I really like it, small and very pocketable, it took me a few rolls to “have faith” in it but lots of good negs proved they can do the job.~~~~~~~~ actually, shutter speeds on #80 (mr kim) the speed adjuster Barnack used is functional and gives approx 1/200 and 1/300 speeds. #9 has one speed , about 1/250.
This is all very interesting. I can imagine that Leica could be interested in a small publication about this.
Thank you very much, Ambro, for sharing this with us!
Erik.

Ha. What I’ve learned about Leica today is that as far as their legacy cameras....they don’t give a hoot because they can’t make money from them.

Yes, I must give you that right. The time that they made the replicas of the Ur and the 0 is long behind us.
Incomprehensible. Probably they get enough publicity nowadays.

A small problem....
I just sent out Miss II for a CLA ... Youxin did a fabulous job,
I can even load her without cutting the film
But upon her return the varying front sections have cracked off or are loose
The back and sides are intact, no cracks, Beautiful
I emailed Aki Asahi ... he does not do for standard, leica I and II
mentioning each camera different in sizes, too much of a problem
Hugo leather does not have a listing for Leica II so I sent them an enquiry...
Anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks in advance for any help

Hugo can cut a new cover for you. I’ve sent him cameras in the past when he did not already have patterns.

Helen, I am sorry to hear of your cracked vulcanite but I recently ran into something that may help explain it. Recently we went away for a long weekend and I put some valuables in the gunsafe which is in an unheated garage, among things was my 1929 Leica 1. When I got it out later there was a big crack across the back of the vulcanite and much looseness of vulcanite. It had been very cold and I think that caused the vulcanite to contract and crack. The head bartender has notes about treating vulcanite with neatsfoot oil once a year and I don't understand it but I think he is right. I think I can reglue my loose, cracked vulcanite but I would urge others to beware extreme cold as a hazard to elderly vulcanite. Joe

@Helen,
Hugo cut this original Stingray leather for my Leica II for me and upon request even left a hole on the rear for the focus calibration plug that early Leicas can sometimes have there.
I admit it is a bit thick and it does stick out past the body contours (look closely at the corners where the leather and the top plate meet and you'll see what I mean), but it is SO nice to handle and it looks a million bucks, has a very luxurious look to it
It is still mentioned on his website but you have to request availability and price. It's over twice the price of other coverings but much more the value than others, imho.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Johan

The camera leather is no longer being cut for early Leica screwmounts because Leica made the camera sizes all different hence a PIA for Aki asahi and Camera Leather
Youxin has no idea where to buy skins for : Leica Standard, I, and II

Thanks JB ! If Hugo leather does not work out here in the States then I will try the Starkie Brothers

Good Point Joe, Thanks !
I do believe You are correct because I was shooting with her before I sent her out for the CLA... in the frigid cold, she was a tad brittle on the outside and Youxin confirmed after CLA she was not serviced in a very long time...dried out on the inside and speeds were off ...Now she is WONDERFUL !

Cool, it’s on your IIIc...
I have a leitz 36mm from my Leica X1,X2 days but I probably will not use
I generally shoot dead center what I want OR a tad off to the side which generally gives me what i want.
Even with the 21 SA I never used a VF.
How bout You Peter, will You use a VF for your 35 ?
