What do you all think about having to trim the film leader with bottom loading these cameras? I just bought a Canon III and found out about that, seems annoying. Just deal with it? ;)

I found out that i have to trim the film leader a long time after i bought the IIc. I am not the sort of person that reads the manual. Never had any issues though.

Oh I didn't see it like that, I can't see a slide, to me it just looks like a bracket to centralise the tripod mount.

But I can't see how it would work as a stereo gizmo as there's no slot for it to slide along and the bar would need to be held differently if it is to move as if on a rail.


My money's on it being to align the optical axis for panoramas or balance. Putting the tripod connection on the end of the camera has always been seen by me as a weakness in the design that a lot of people attempted to correct with various gadgets and fittings.

I think the object is too large for that. Why then the big, fixed screw on the left?

However, I guess you are right that it is not a stereo sliding bar. But it looks like the stereo sliding bar in Lagers second book more than anything else.

The stereo slide Erik refers to is (according to Laney) FIARO or the later FIATE. He illustrates FIATE which is not the same as this.

FIARO is 75mm long, FIATE 150mm.

In the OP's picture I cannot see how the central socket slides and clamps. It looks fixed. There is a clamp on FIATE.

Then, seeing the flash unit I thought maybe it is a base for a flash holder, but can't find anything similar.

So I go back to the idea that it is one of those tripod centralising brackets that would indeed be useful if the camera had that big heavy flash attached to it!
 
Why using a flash on a tripod-mounted 35mm camera? The bracket can be used on a tripod, but that is not its main goal I think. It is for carrying that giant flash gun on the left together with the camera!

I have exactly the same black/chrome Leica II conversion as Johan, but with more scuffs. Serial number 185800. The speed button is a bit smaller. Speeds Z, 20, 30, 40, 60, 100, 200 and 500.

Johan, I think second from the right, 63028 is the same as yours (apart from the fact that it has no strap lugs!)?

I see yours does not have an H on the end of GMB. Is this an error or something to do with Germany's complex post war past?

I refer the the GMB (missing H on Johan's camera) between ERNST LEITZ and WETZLAR, not the DBP below Leica.

As an aside I am saving a lot of money. The arrival of the virus has meant that I haven't visited either dentist or optician for ages!

No problem at all, easily done!

Now back to that missing 'H', any clues? I think we may have seen something similar on this forum or has Johan shown us the camera before or am I suffering from deja vue?
