mc: bummer. Like Raid said, we've all been there. With CLAs, none of my purchases have been great "buys" except for maybe one: An OM-2 that I bought for $56 w/ brown leather case & 50/1.8. Sold the case for $40, got a CLA for about $120, then gave the camera and lens as a starter kit to my daughter. It could probably sell for the net $135 I have into it, but all of the other oldies I've bought and cleaned up would not get my money back.
But look at your IIIf this way: You have lost financially, but someone is now very happy, and that's good karma.

I'm sorry you are upset about the sale, but agree with Trius to try and think about what good feelings you have brought to someone else... I recently bought a Nicca + Nikkor 50/2 from ebay for a very good price it has given me more fun & rejuvenation to my photography than I can describe.

Interestingly MC, my best deal came indirectly through RFF ... check this thread.

I'd never put an item up for less than I want for it, even if that means the starting price isn't so attractive, otherwise a reserve should be placed. Jesse1dog sent me a pm mentioning your auction actually, if I knew it was there I would have placed a bid! I understand your pain, though. I sold some collectibles on eBay.. one of which was a anime figure that was in its box, over a foot tall which cost me about £30. I put it up for £5, it sold at that one bid to a dealer (could tell from the domain on his email address, and previous auctions) and I put the p+p cost too low so I lost money again! I know that is much less of a financial loss, but I feel your pain!

mc_va It's grey and pissing rain and I'm mad as hell at myself.[/quote said:I saw the body on ebay. I saw the bids that had been put on. I couldn't believe that there was no other interest. Like you I thought I had done a lot of research on prices before I bought my IIf. I was wrong too and ended up paying well over the odds. At least it works and doesn't appear to need a CLA - yet!
If nothing else I can feel for you. I didn't bid because I don't like the IIIf anyway - the speed adjustment isn't as easy on my fingers as it is on a non-sync body. Its a problem I have with the IIf.
So that's it. It isn't the end of the world - although it might feel like it. Nobody has got hurt. It was only money you lost - and possibly a bit of pride as well.
Today is another day. OK - you now tell me its still raining!!
Have you tried taking photos of light reflecting in puddles?
Go take some photos - you couldn't really use the IIIf anyhow. And it's gone!
Best wishes

And as a Karma balancer I relate this tale ... I bought a red dial IIIf from the bay and paid a fair price for it. When it arrived I cocked the shutter, pressed the release and the shutter curtains disintigrated! :bang:

Is that Dylan holding a Kiev ? I heard he used a Leica III something, but that looks more like an FSU . Cool pic regardless.

Ssshh, don't tell him. The actual pic is of him holding a mystery RF I couldn't identify (see enlarged actual photo). Maybe someone else can. I, ehhh, "handed him" my Zorki.1 via Paintbrush for the avatar.Blue Distagon said:Is that Dylan holding a Kiev ? I heard he used a Leica III something, but that looks more like an FSU . Mauro,
The camera is a 1930 1a and came with the original case, rangefinder and film cassettes. I bought it from an American who had inherited it from his father in France I think. Apparently it had been kept in a humidity and temp controled display case for many years. It barely has a mark on it and still has the label of the camera shop in Paris that it was purchased from in 1930 on the base plate!
It wasn't cheap of course but usable history of this quality and charisma is a special experience! Eventually I'll get around to taking some photographs with it and posting them.

Thanks to all of you caring and wonderful friends in RFF, your posts do make me see this sale in a different light, so to speak. I lost, someone gained, it's still a beautiful camera which I was privileged to own for a little while. I expect, sometime down the road, I'll end up getting a bargain, although I'd rather do my buying and selling here on RFF. --Michael
