Okay, I believe (hope! pray!) I have finally figured out how to post an image, so here goes.
(Ta-dah!) My newly acquired, first ever Nikon rangefinder, an S3 with 5cm 1.4.
I adore her, and am in the process of selecting an appropriate name.
Hope this works!
I'm sure you will "bond" , nice strap BTW

Well it not really a rangefinder - though it can be compared to a S2 with a dead finder! I have the elusive F to S adapter , but I find that it easy for the 21f4 F lens to jam on it. It works fine with lenses like the f-mount 12f5.6 and 15f4.5 Heliars though.
Interestingly enough, you "lock-up" the mirror for this lens - and it becomes a remarkably quiet F - more like a SP or S3 with titanium shutter.

Now this is cool!
Historically, as a longtime F user, have read about these conversions but never actually seen one. Righteous stuff!

f-s adaptor and 21 nikkor
f-s adaptor and 21 nikkor
Never could understand why some people have problems using the F-S adapter with the F mount 21. The adapter is obviously designed to take the 21 including the prong that alines 21 and existed only for that lens. I think half my RF pictures I take now involve using the F-mount 21 on an SP. Nice combination. Chees, WES

Wes, it works most of the time - but occasionally it "locks" up - so it was easier to dedicate an F body for it and the free up the adapter for using the 12mm and 15mm Heliars on the S2's.

The adapter does work - but sometimes it gets stuck. This is an old shot, Kodak 5231 (movie stock +X) with the 21f4 on a S2. Developed in Beutler.
I liked the chrome valve cover on the old slant six.

You say you made a home-made adapter. Fancy making another?? I'll pay, of course.

making a finder adapter
making a finder adapter
Reply to Curran:
First you would need a finder mounting salvaged from an old Nikon F. Then you salvage the standard shoe from an old Honeywell flashgun and combine the two. It gets complicated. But Nikon made a simple adapter to mount the F shoe accessories on a Nikkormat that does the job better. So check ebay and if you find one, you would be all set. WES

Thanks for the link Dez. I have seen that write-up, but sadly I'm not setup to do that kind of work. I'll figure out something, eventually!

Niiiiice!
I would adore snagging one to shoot with, and have been scoping out E-Bay but simply cannot make myself pull the trigger. At least not yet.
Good job!

Decided to take my S3 with me along with my D300, just to go with a film

Weddings were good, used the S3 at one, it was pretty dark at the reception, they
had lite blue lights that was screwing up the digital cameras screens! but the S3
focused great.

Nick! Suh-nap! Gorgeous!
But beware: Nikon RFs are strangely addictive. Once you get one, it is hard to go back. And I am a prime example.

And soooo easy to load
And soooo easy to load
The Nikon RFs are, indeed, addictive. The S2 most of all. Life-size viewing and amazing glass to put out front. The real seduction is in the film loading, believe it or not. I've never had a roll of film "fall off the tulip" in a Nikon. Ever. Load, put the back on, advance & shoot.
Oh! and the dimensions are such that if you are using an accessory viewfinder, the tip of your nose does NOT end up in the main viewfinder window, unlike M's. Enjoy.
