The Desdemona Sands. This is the silt dropped by the Columbia River as it rounds a bend and the inner curve loses momentum and can no longer sustain the contained silt. And thus we have the Desdemona Sands. Before Bonneville Dam when the salmon were "hogs" and ran up to 70 or 80 pounds there were buildings on the sands. They housed large dray horses who pulled in salmon netted from the river. They kept the Finns and Norkses on separate shifts because they fought so much with each other.

When we get a full moon King Tide the low tide reveals about all of the Sands. Here are three shots of them. Hey, you in the back, I see you sleeping. ;o) The open water in the distance behind the left tip of the Sands is the mouth of the Columbia and the river edge of the perilous Columbia River Bar. Over 2,000 ships lost and still counting.

And just so's you know we do have dry land along the Columbia, this bucolic scene upriver near Sauvie Island, yes, where the nude beach is. Empty this time of year. ;o)
