Can someone say for sure that a camera case for the body will lower shutter noise. I love my ZI (even more than the M7, I had) but the metal shutter curtain is noisier than cloth. Can a camera case lower that noise?

I think that they do lower the noice. Now - question is by how much and will the difference in noise be enough to make you happy? Only one way to find out. For me - I use cases , but not only for noise reduction but also because they make it more comfortable for me to hold camera. My cases are also both - Luigi and Zhou.
BTW, I have a case for my very quiet M5 too - it makes holding it way better IMO.

Akiva, the ZI's hardly loud in the first place though. The difference in volume it makes to the M6's cloth is absolutely minimal.

I tried using a half-case with my (now sold) Hexar RF for this very reason.

Perhaps it made a small difference but was hardly a game-changer.

If you like the camera, just try to get over the sharp shutter sound and love it for what it is.

If you have your hands wrapped round the camera I can't see that a half case will make a great deal of difference to what you or anyone else will hear. Depending on where the shutter is, with a rangefinder camera pressed against your face, the shutter sound is nearly bound to be much louder to you than someone standing in front of the camera lens. Am I right?
