Are DP1 users able to set fixed/hyperfocal focus distance with the camera?

That was, in fact, the only way I used mine.

Ray,
Yes and easily too....
here's the hyperfocal distances for the each f stop on the camera....
f4.0 12.6'
f5.6 8.93'
f8.0 6.33'
f11 4.49'
as a refresher to those that forgot.....
remember that the dof will extend from 1/2 the hyperfocal distance to infinity.......
The DP1 is great cause when ya turn it on...it's exactly where ya left it and where ya want it set.....ya just check the focus wheel sometimes to make sure ya didn't move it......thats it....no bells, no whistles...just a real serious image making machine that delivers above and beyond the call of duty....
you are now returned to the regular scheduled programming.....

about the sharpness thing, i was looking at some pictures for the dp1 on flickr and they looked so sharp that it no longer seemed real. perhaps it is aggressive sharpening. i love the photos, but something about it doesn't look "right"
two examples that i had found

That's all in the pp.....
I find that I need less sharpening with the DP1 than all my other cameras....
It's very easy to over sharpen.......
The DP1 makes real images...so real that I swim in them all the time......

I agree they don't look 'right' but they look very 'processed'. I see that with lots of cameras - which makes me suspect the post-processing. Now I see what you mean, but I wouldn't call that 'too sharp', I'd call it artificially sharpened and otherwise tarted up.

Looks HDR-ish.

Don't know what the G10 has, but the DP1 has a wheel which is marked in meters as well as a scale which pops up on the screen which shows the focus distance as a red dot along a scale, marked in both meters and feet (latest firmware added feet to the scale).
I just bought a second one which is going to undergo an attempted IR conversion this weekend... I think it's an awesome little camera.
the "feet" addition makes me a happy boy. for some reason the g10 has an awesome scale but only in meters? after so many years of scale focusing with my brain in "feet" mode i just can't seem to think "meters".
i don't know quite why, but i haven't been as excited about one particular camera in quite some time... and i have been blessed with some fine machines. now if someone tells me i can turn off all the "beeps" and run totally silent i'm going straight into my best moonwalk.

i'll have to look into the DP1 some more, it wasn't just those photos that looked that processed, i just picked those two as examples.

You can turn off all the beeps and, separately, the shutter sound and go all silent... (insert moonwalk here)now if someone tells me i can turn off all the "beeps" and run totally silent i'm going straight into my best moonwalk.
Despite the naysayers, they got a lot of things right with this camera.

I should have added: with the quality of a dslr... I have looked through both the pros and the cons of it, and, I like to use the time when I photograph...

you have to remember that the dp1, being a foveon equipped camera doesn't have any aa filters, similar to the m8

how did sigma get the color issue's dealt with vs leica? anyone know?

forgive me if i head off in another direction (and maybe another thread is needed). maybe leica needs to be paying closer attention to this "market" or "genre" of cameras. it would seem to me that camera's such as the dp1, g10 and lx-3/d-lux 4 fit more with the spirit of the original barnack leica.
the hexar af was a brilliant camera... it's only a matter of time before we see that flash of brilliance again, perhaps in a different form, but the spirit will certainly be there. with some minor tweaks the dp2 could come very, very close.
