I second this...photos from my DP1 and m8 are distinctively crisper (sharper) than photos i used to get from my 5D. I suspect it's the lack of micro haze (aa filter) without any shaperning applied. There could people out there that still adds sharperning because of habit which may make the photos overly done. And don't forget, sites like flickr ADD sharpening as a default.

I've used the SD14 and DP1 and so far the colours can be unreliable at times. Even on a good bright day ie low iso, it can play up. The desaturation as the iso goes up is well known. My m8 doesn't have any of this issue. I seriously doubt the DP2 would be any different but here's hoping!

I have and love the Hexar AF. If a digital Hexar AF becomes available, I would jump on it. The DP2 I suspect still a way from the Hexar in terms of all round robustness and speed of AF.

Hi there, I found this thread from the flickr photo stats and thought I'd share some facts about the image. 🙂

I'm not sure if this is the sigma software that sharpens the image by default but I hardly apply further sharpning since the DP1 photos are already sharp when viewed in sigma editing software. However, I did try to lift the exposure and give it some punch to the colours where it was due in photoshop.

Anyways, I'm not here to defend my photo because I'll be the first to admit they are not great but I just thought I'd fill you in about the sharpness thing. I hope I didn't sound to come across any other way.

Are you talking about the purple blacks due to infrared not being properly filtered? The AA filter and the IR filter are separate things. I think Sigma's cameras still filter out IR without the AA filter.

Anyway, I'm excited about the DP2 if it really is quicker in operation than the DP1.

thanks, i really like the photo overall but just something about the look that doesn't strike me as being natural. not to pick on you or anything, your photo is one of the first to show when searching using the by camera feature.

As a Sigma SD10 user I can only say that the sharpness "issue" is real: you have to sharpen carefully. There is no AA filter and no interpolation, so the RAW image is already sharp and the SPP software does some sharpening on its own. Some users, for large prints, actually decrease the sharpening in the SPP software as part of the process. In addition the 28mm equiv. lens on the DP1 is considered to be about as good as it can get, and it is matched to the sensor and camera. The Sigmas may have some noise issues at high ISO, but Rytterfalk always seems to manage just fine, which makes one wonder about the complaints. I don't know of any noise issues at low ISO. The DP2 ought to be an interesting camera for this group.
 
I think other than the new processing engine the new 41mm eq lens is also a stop faster (f2.8 instead of f4)...

I like the idea of having the same focal lengths as with my Bronica and doing alternative cheaper shots with the Sigma's.
I'm looking forward to see what it brings..

Foveon files are crisp, because there is no Bayer pattern interpolation, as is used in traditional CCD and CMOS sensors. With Foveon the R,G,B sensitive layers are stacked, like in film. So, you have one receptor that records RGB.
With a traditional sensor your total pixel count is divided among R,G,B and the image is a result of interpolating the 3 separate captures.

This is true. When I process the pictures from my DP1 in Sigma Photo Pro, I set the "Sharpening" slider to "-4," because I have found that the "0" default setting causes some sharpening artifacts to appear on very large prints. I prefer to do all the sharpening in QImage at the time of printing.

1. i have seen that wonderful 800 asa portrait-poster of linn-carl rytterfalks girlfriend/wife at photokina 08.
maybe you can see it on his website.
i was highly excited about richard merrils( foveon inventor, unfortunately already in the heaven) contribution at that fair. from all posters his was by farthest the sharpest with the best hdr.

2. my p+s digital telescope more for the wideangles. so we could expect the dp2 do this less than dp1. we dont know how it works, do you?

I downloaded as well as printed a few of these images, one image shot wide open and boy I am impressed with the colors and sharpness

I have no other experience with Sigma digital files but I was very please with these jpegs ... I usually shoot a Fuji S5 so my expectations are high in terms of latitude, etc

Obviously no higher ISO samples but at the moment I think I am really thinking hard of this being my next compact camera, especially for traveling when I don't want to lug around my DSLR
 
I really like the character of the images that this sensor produces.
The questions remaining - high iso performance and camera operability. (raw write times/autofocus etc.)
It will be interesting to read how this camera performs in a few comprehensive tests/reviews.
 
I am getting so excited too.. the output on the brochure is very very good. I love the 41mm which is very close to my summicron-c. Question while waiting is, should I get a DP1 while waiting? I already have the Ricoh GR Digital 🙄
 
As much as I want the DP2 to be the friend of my DP1, there seems to be some issues I think Sigma did not address....maybe....

The zoomie buttons are in a bad place...the thumb will hit them all the time thereby ruling out setting ISO or something to them...hmmmm

The AF and screen must be greatly improved due to the fact that a viewfinder will have limited use...I use finders all the time but with the shallow DOF of the 41mm...the screen and AF better be good or they are in trouble from the git go...

I use the screen on my DP1 just to check settings...the finder is for image making....hmmm

well, we'll see shortly.......
