You'll know from my other thread that I'm debating between a Sigma DP1 now or waiting for the release of the DP2. This was not so much based on performance issues, but the 28mm vs 41mm lens.

Anyway, another reason this is so tempting - and yet concerning - is that DP1 prices are plummeting here in Australia. At the moment many places are selling them off at AUD699 (GBP330, USD480). This is quite surprising when Sigma was adamant that they want to keep the DP1 & 2 going simultaneously. This is a concern because its closest rival (yes in my subjective opinion only!!) the GRDII is holding it's AUD1000 RRP with the best special being AUD869. How has Ricoh maintained it's price point while the Sigma's at clearance prices?

The same case in the used market where DP1's are going with VF @ AUD700 on fleaBay. While GRDII's are still fetching over AUD800. So sirens go off on the resale opportunity of cashing in the DP1 later...:(

I don't know if this is the case for you all, but if so is the maintenance of the GRDII indicative of it's demand and utility...and conversely is the huge drop in the still current line Sigma indicative of.....?

Hmmm...

It's funny how we want prices low and complain when they aren't and when they're a bargain price the first question is.."well what's wrong with it then?" - OK it's probably just me.

Good grief. If you want the camera, buy it! I'm always amazed at people who buy cameras fretting about their future resale value. I've only ever seen that thinking within the closed circle of RF users. The DP1 is a digital camera. It's going to lose value.

Indeed I don't intend buying the camera as an investment.

The thrust of my post was to discover whether the DP1 prices were dropping as drastically elsewhere and if others knew why - especially since comparative units are holding close to their RRP. It cannot be the release of the DP2, as they are stated to sit on shelves side-by-side.

The resale comment was a throw away. Anyway, what's the hurry?...at the rate their dropping I could wait a little longer and get one free with my next set of steak knives (OK another throw away).

Honestly, I'm fairly new to digital compacts and am just curious is all - and really appreciate the collective insights from this forum....also my disposable income necessitates I buy smart once not naively many times over.

Perhaps the DP1 will be re-released with the speed and ISO improvements of the DP2, i.e. a DP1 mk II

Now your talking Majid...

...hence why I'm curious about the radical price drops before the DP2 release. Just think you're at the photo store with the DP1 and 2 sitting side-by-side and one is 50% less than the other...and still the sales guy is insisting that they're on a par except one's 28mm and the 41mm...honestly...
