Sky Arts Master of photography competition

No.

From looking through the terms and conditions it appears any candidate must bear the cost of any travel during the 'application/audition process' but if selected as a "talent" all further costs will be paid by the production company. There is specific mention that no fee is required and none sought by any staff or representative. Other fine print may apply 😉

The €150,000.00 prize is also part compensation/payment for SKY's use of your images taken throughout the process (fairly standard in so many competitions.)

I never yet understood the typical copyright situation for competitions in general and also of this one in particular: Is it that the 'company', Sky in this case, has the right to use the images in any way they wish if in connection with the competition but the photographer keeps the copyright and can still 'sell' the image for other uses, or it is that the copyright simply 100% goes to the company and the photographer never will be able to use it in any commercial way again?

Are you entering Simon, you should do, you've a great back catalogue to choose from...

Thanks!

I'm not sure whether I'll make an application, I need to read the forms fully but it looks like applicants will be given 'tests' across a number of photographic disciplines. So it's not just landscape, studio, street or whatever.

My studio experience beyond corporate head shots is seriously lacking. The process sounds interesting but the chances of getting chosen must be very low when it's Europe wide.

As mentioned above I need to read through the t&c's more carefully yet but I agree the copyright issues around competitions like this can be murky at best. Frankly, I'd be OK with the organisers to use any images to promote the competition and subsequent program but handing over full copyright always makes photographers nervous....or plain angry!

Did anybody from here join?

A lot of legal mumbo jumbo in the Terms & Conditions but I really like this one:

"Sky and the Production Label reserve the right to award the prize
to the Winner in any manner deemed appropriate"

A used FIAT - price estimated by an Italian used car dealer, perhaps?
Or cash - 1£ a month? 😀

I suspect it's a contractual rights issue. Many BBC programs are, annoyingl as a viewer,, unavailable on iPlayer within the UK for a number of reasons such as a program being a third party production or imported and rights not including repeats, streaming and downloading etc.

You may have more luck searching for a site that streams programs outside of the legal parameters but that would be at your own discretion and risk.
