Spicy is spot on. I´m talking about something "CHEAP" here.
The X100s and GXR+cool glass are killer options but far beyond the price limit.
I sold my Leicas because I just don´t feel like traveling 100 days with thousands of euros on gear with me. The less I have to care about my cameras the better pictures I take, the voice of experience!
The X100 is really a top contender. I´m basically looking for alternatives here 😉

I echo Will's comment, make sure to take a look at E-PL5 instead of E-PM2 before deciding. Between the flip screen and additional buttons may provide much better shooting experience.

With adaptors I use zuiko and Nikon glass too. You could also find a range of Jupiter lenses for peanuts.

You make a good case for the GF1 and don’t mind buying used – so why not the GF1? I still use one for travel and it has never let me down. It gets used in some harsh places for work too. I have the 14mm, 20mm and 45mm lenses (28-40-90 equiv) and use the 20mm by far the most, next the 14, and hardly ever the 45. If I were buying lenses for travel only, I’d get a zoom. There are always times when you have the wrong lens on and it just isn't practical to change lenses. Biggest annoyance is the screen wash-out in bright light, but I imagine they all do that.

I have the P6000. I rarely use it but I have to say, when I do I find myself wondering if it's worth having all my other kit. It shoots RAW, has good battery life, the lens is very good, it syncs with my huge Nikon SB flashgun 😉, and it's very compact.

Given your requirements for no smaller than m43 and cheap,, the gf1 used bodies are going for somewhere under 200.. Been awhile since I last looked at their price.
Gx1 is going to give u 16mp vs 12. Better af and higher iso..
Personally, I think u should go into a camera store and try out the rx100.. Bring along a sd card... C if they will let u take some pics in the store. The quality of the pics u get from the rx100 is surprisingly good even at higher iso.

A panasonic GF1 with the stellar 20mm can probably be picked up for not much money nowadays.
Can't go wrong with it. I used one during a monthlong trip in peru/bolivia. Banged it against rocks when hiking a few times. No issues!

The GF1 with the Panasonic 20 and 14 is my favorite small camera kit. If I were buying today, I would consider the GX1. Take Keith's advice and see if you can get your hands on prospective cameras. Good luck and enjoy your travels.

Not sure if it fits the bill but I love my little Panasonic LX7 and it was pretty cheap and quite powerful.
There are so many wonderful small affordable cameras out there these days, it's a tough decision to make for sure!

i used to have a NEX-3 which i used with some manual glass (mainly Minolta MD 50 f1.7 etc.) and i really have to say that they would have been really nice if they weren't that big....using the fujian 35/f1.7 including adapter will have the same size as using the 18-55 native sony lens.
If you want to keep the NEX-system light and small i would advice you to use m39 or M glass. Anything else will make it seem a bit awkward.

i would buy a used fuji x100 and a couple off-brand batteries off your local classifieds. bring a couple 4gb cards and a small bad that fits other stuff you might need during the day. i brought this setup on a two week trip on march break and it was very versatile. as for film i wouln't bother myself, i brought my stylus epic and tons of film with me and I didn't even finish a roll of it. I found it weird shooting with two cameras like that.

GXR + S10 (24-72) or + P10 (28-300) are $350-60 at B&H. No travel-dust on the sensor when it's a lensor!
Or: used GXR B&H $180, + Henry's last P10 for $100. Down to $280 for that travel-zoom combo. Hard to beat for a little pack, and you might pick up a used Ricoh M-sensor & lens on your travels, after you've tossed the useless stuff from your pack (e.g. underwear ha ha).

My "go-to" digital lightweight is a Panasonic Lumix LX7 with the EVF2 viewfinder. It's got everything from 1:1 to 16:9 formats, an f1.4 24-90mm zoom range (aperture ring round the lens where it should be) and all the creative flexibility of P/A/S/M + scene and preset modes. Image quality is fantastic.
Lots of great options out there, so no reason to pick a duffer....
