Sounds like the EM/FM/FG with 1.8 E lens or pancake?
It'll be EM/FG/FG-20 with the 45mm f/2.8 AI-P.

So, what I am thinking about is the smallest FILM Nikon SLR (not pos, not digital), that would fit in the smallest space.

EM if all you want is an aperture priority simple to use camera.
50/f1.8 E if on a budget
45/f2.8 GN if you have more money to splash
45/f2.8 P if you have loads to splash

If you compare the specs, it becomes obvious pretty soon that especially in today's market it does not make an awful lot of sense for someone somewhat knowledgeable about photography to choose an EM over an FG-20 (let alone FG).
Not necessarily true, most like to dumb down occasionally, have some fun and concentrate on the subject. I find going out with the EM and 50mm quite refreshing. I have plenty of other cameras if I want extra facilities and sophistication. Of course if it's going to be your only camera....

I'm quite fond of my EM and with the Cosina Voigtlaender 40mm f2 pancake it is wonderful little SLR. I made many many pictures with it last year in England.
Of course it is plastic and feels cheap, that's the whole point. But the meter and shutter are accurate and it's small and light.

The Nikon FA and a 28/2.8 or 50/2 work great for me in an outdoor jacket pocket.

Hmmm...now THERE's a possibility never thought of before.

I used to be able to fit an M3 with 50mm Elmar comfortably into my back pocket with the lens collapsed; that was, of course, before my arse got quite so fat.
All things are possible but I still think a camera, especially in the back pants pocket, would be uncomfortable to sit with in said pocket.
I always thought that the purpose of a small camera bag/fanny pack etc was to allow you to carry a camera comfortably and not wear out pants or coat pockets.
Each to their own though.

So, has anyone got a photo size comparison between the FA and the EM? Or the FG/FG20 and the EM?
How about the Nikon EM with 35 mm 2.5 E lens? Total kit less than $200?

Dave, an EM with MD-E and 35/2.5E was my go-to camera for years. Sold it on eBay a while back, have photos from then, can post later.
The FA would give you matrix metering, an advantage not to be dismissed. But it's a bigger camera.

Huh?
I'm all for small cameras, but trying to jam a camera design that has never been intended or marketed as pocket-able is rather weird to me.
The smallest 35mm (not half-frame, not 110) SLR (maybe in the world) is a Zenit 3C, basically a Fed or Zorki I with a mirror box. If you can find a pancake M39 mount lens, that would be the smallest SLR kit.
But even with that, I wouldn't jam it in any of my pockets, especially if I'm planning to sit down anytime soon

Heh, heh...as I mentioned, if it can theoretically fit into a pants pocket, it will be much easier to carry it in other fashions such as under a jacket, in a fanny pack or in the bag(s).
Maybe the Barnacks with a collapsible lens would fit best but then, no meter.

Here is a shot from the 35mm 2.5 E. I use that lens on my FM2. It's not a bad little lens but grows in size when you add the hood.

Shooter of Film...
The only camera I own that I would remotely call pocketable would be the Olympus XA1...what kind of pockets do you guys have...

I can stick most 35mm cameras into my "winter" jacket. It's got huge pockets, 4 of them. When I visited Chicago in October, it was perfect for the weather, and held a D70 with an 18-70 zoom in one pocket, and an M4p with a 35mm Ultron in another. And a bunch of other stuff in the other two pockets. My hands were free.

The best camera is one that still works!

Don't forget a thermos of hot coffee or tea ... surely there's room for that!

There is none, unless you wear "cargo pants".

Agreed, even my stylus epic is a bit big for any pocket I own, barring a full coat...

When I used to roam the woods each fall deer hunting, there was room for that and more! Now, that I don't use a gun anymore, there is definitely room in the pockets for what I need.
These days, shooting a camera is much more fulfilling than shooting a high-calibre rife.
