Sneaky way to get approval for lens purchase

My wife is the administrator for our parish and has come up with a project to inventory all the items of value within the parish. A fairly big job, really. She came up with the idea of having me photograph all this stuff - probably a six month project.

I told her this morning that to do it I really needed a new lens. She said "go for it." I know she doesn't read this forum, so I can say here to you RFF folks that I could get by without the new lens, but ssssshhhhhhh 😀

For the record, I have been wanting to get the Panny 14/2.5 for my mu43 kit (Oly EM-5 and EP-2, Oly 17/2.8 and 45/1.8.
 
Sounds to me like you may want to consider wearing the pants in the future... unless it is too late already.

She sounds like a good wife. Keep her!
 
I am actually quite glad that my wife has an overview over our finances...and I still need no permission. I earn 70% of our income anyway... 😉


maybe be a BIT more honest. Like you do not need a new lens, but it would make things easier (does it), or that it would at least help, if that's true. It should at least be something you really will use for the task.

Me too. I make 100% and my wife spends - quite well, I might add - nearly 100%. (We manage to siphon off some money up front for retirement saving, etc... but not much.) Life is expensive and there is never enough money for everything so I appreciate having good management of it. I need no permission, nor any sneaking... just a brief discussion so we are on the same page.

Agreed... but as a "church insider" I can assure you that it wouldn't be the first time.
 
No, the church would not be paying for a new lens, and our church has no extra funds anyway. And I have been doing various photograhy jobs for our church over the past year, all for my "usual fee", which is $0.00., and this job will be no different.

I do feel guilty at times since my hobbies cost a lot of money compared to my wife's. Over the past two years I have probably spent $3K (or more) on camera equipment, at least that on computers - and my new Orbea bike was close to $3K. My two daughters have been telling me for years that I am spoiled - cannot deny it. And while I do bring in 75% of our income, we do not have the concept of my money and her money - it's our money. That's worked for 39 years now...

You are a good person. The discrepency between who volunteers and who gets paid in many churches is astounding. I would use the words unethical and wrong but that is not nice to say.

Same situation in my house -- my hobbies are very different from my wifes. Mine cost money (big money , sometimes) on occassion. Hers are much more modest but persistent. In terms of who's really costs more... I'm never sure.

"My money vs Your money"... that is a concept we just joke about!

we decided on a nice split. We both put a percentage of our wage on an account we both have access to, and keep the rest for our own pleasures.

so there is my money, her money and our money. works 🙂

If it's worked for 39 years, stick with it.

...but get that new lens anyway 😉

Don't feel guilty. The Pany 14/2.5 lens is excellent and not that expensive, and you've identified a specific need to get it. Sounds like a good plan to me. To quote YOUR wife: "Go for it!"
 
My philosophy is that life is short -- if there is something you really want, and you have the funds, then go for it. Enjoy. And you'll be doing a good deed for your church.
 
So that's where my tithe goes to - purchasing new lenses for the parish's administrator's husband.
