So... The Filter Won't Come Off

Worst stuck filter that I ever had was no match for a pair of pliers with a circular head. They are a last resort. First I try Using the pliers to bear down on a mouse pad around the filter. If that does not work, metal to metal, the filter always comes off.

I think I'll let a repairer try that, since it's a new Summarit-M lens. The filter was expensive enough but is sacrificial compared to the lens.

I recently purchased a summicron 90 that had a dented filter and filter ring. As I am putting it on an M8 I had to remove the damaged uv filter in order to install an IR-cut filter. Man it was stuck. I tried pinching the filter thread with multi grips as suggested earlier in this thread but it just ripped the metal off and cracked the filter glass. At this stage I was thinking of heading to a lens technician with tail between legs. As a last resort I opened the multi grips right up and gingerly applied force to the outside of the filter which eventually worked it loose but not before the lens barrel started twisting open at the point where aperture is selected. Not recommended for the faint-of-heart, I had the shakes up and my legs had turned to jelly by the end of the ordeal!

Peter at CRR got the filter off without damage. He said it was very, very tight and the problem is that it binds against the "protection ring" of the Summarit and acts as a kind of lockring. He returned the filter in a bag labelled "DO NOT USE ON SUMMARIT"!

A cheap Hoya UV filter screws on and off like a knife through butter. Weird.

Now...who wants a B+W MRC UV black filter? Not to be used on a Summarit, of course...
