Some new photos from Fort Wayne

Polaroid photograph of a handmade wooden American flag leaning against the front steps of a house on Main Street (US-33) in the small town of Churubusco, Indiana. I photographed it in the late evening, shortly before sunset.

Handpainted wooden American flags, often made from pieces of old wooden fences, are a popular form of folk art in Indiana.

I photographed it at night after the sun had set.

Polaroid photograph of a woman and kids holding each others' seats to form a 'train' while waiting for the Flying Circus ride to begin at the 2022 Three Rivers Festival in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. This is a type of swing carousel. Riders sit in seats hanging from the ride on long chains; when it spins, the seats fly outward, almost horizontal!

LOL! Those kids seemed to be enjoying them. I usually get Elephant Ears at the festival.

What are Elephant Ears? Are they a fried dough thing? Or some other Midwestern specialty? Regional foods are fascinating. I'm from RI, and when I mention clam cakes to people in NM, I get a look of puzzlement and disgust. But clam cakes are even better than cheese fries!

Elephant Ears are fried dough, usually covered in a good amount of sugar and cinnamon.

Your friends in New Mexico are right; clam cakes would be disgusting! I actually lived in Santa Fe for a couple of years, 2006 and 2007.

AKA "doughboys". Now, Chris, if you lived in NM, certainly your tender Midwestern palate learned to adjust to everything drowned in chile, red, green, or "Christmas"! How much worse could a clam cake be? Do you even know what a clam cake is?
For those poor souls who've never experienced the joy of clam cakes, they are a coastal RI tradition. They're made with a basic fritter batter that is made with clam juice, seasoned with a bit of black pepper and nutmeg (though that's a subject of debate, of course) and loaded with fresh minced clams. The batter is scooped out with an ice cream scoop and dropped into smoking hot oil where it deep-fries to a golden brown, golf ball-sized bit of goodness. Most folks like them sprinkled with a good hit of malt vinegar. And they must be eaten while still tongue-searingly hot!
Now, true connoisseurs of the clam cake know one further secret: The best clam cakes are had late in the season, at the clam shacks that haven't changed their grease all summer. The well-aged grease gives the clam cakes an extra subtle layer of flavor!
Now I ask you, what's so disgusting about that?

I can't eat chili; my stomach vomits it back up almost instantly. Anything spicy at all causes vomiting or severe diarrhea. I never eat shelfish, ever. The very idea disgusts me. I eat a VERY restricted diet because of my health problems and because even without that, 99% of the things people eat are absolutely sickingly revolting to me. I have a weakened immune system and things like clams carry nasty diseases; the meat I do eat is cooked VERY well done because I have nearly died several times from eating undercooked meat. The last time, my medical bills were over $75,000.

Polaroid photographs of the partially demolished north end of Saint Joseph Hospital on the corner of Broadway and Main Street in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. This end of the building faces Main Street.

Founded in 1869, Saint Joseph Hospital was the oldest hospital in Fort Wayne. It closed in November, 2021 and demolition began in 2022.

Originally a Roman Catholic hospital, Saint Joseph was sold years ago to a big for-profit company that also owns Lutheran Hospital and Dupont Hospital in Fort Wayne. The company built a new, much smaller hospital one block over on the corner of Main Street and Van Buren Street to replace the aging Saint Joseph Hospital. The Saint Joseph name was not kept; the new hospital is called "Lutheran Downtown."

Polaroid photograph of a tired-looking worker looking out from the serving window of Red Barn Elephant Ears at the end of a night at the 2022 Three Rivers Festival in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana.

This company has been selling elephant ears (fried dough covered in sugar and cinnamon) at the festival's "Junk Food Alley" since I was a young child. There are usually one or two other elephant ear vendors there, but Red Barn's are the best. I always buy one every time I go to the festival to photograph.

Polaroid photograph of the Statue of Liberty holding the yard light in front yard of a house on Metts Street, between Mill Street and Roe Street, in the small town of Ossian, Indiana.

These Lady Liberty lamp posts are made of cast aluminum by a company in Alabama called Tuscumbia Iron Works. They offer a discount if you buy four or more! The idea of one person buying so many of them is strangely amusing to me.

This belongs to the same house that has the plywood cutout of Bobby Knight on the porch!

"Junk Food Alley"! Who could resist? Why is it that, while normally excruciatingly careful about my diet, I totally succumb to the worst sort of fair food when I find myself in those environments? Corn dogs! Cheese fries! Doughboys! YEAAHHH!!!

My theory is that there are regions of space where Newtonian physics, time, and diet are more subject to quantum laws. A festival is one of those places. A dinner at my neighbor’s is another. How else can I explain my consuming nearly a full bowl of the Chicken in a Biskit appetizer? Corn dogs with mustard? Totally understandable.

LOL. Yeah you have to buy some junk food at the carnival. I made sure to get an elephant ear every time I went down to the festival.
