Some new photos from Fort Wayne

When I was young, my father hung a tire swing from a tall, thick oak tree in the backyard. I had more fun swinging on it than with the regular steel swing sets we had. Tire swings are still common in rural Indiana, though they aren't seen much in the city where I grew up.

This on is at a farm on County Road 1100N, east of County Road 400W, in Huntington County, Indiana. I photographed it a couple of weeks ago.

This beautiful old farmhouse is on State Road 114, just east of State Road 9, on the northern edge of Huntington county, Indiana. If it weren't for the modern window air conditioner, it would look like a scene out of the Nineteenth Century.

I photographed it the same day that I photographed the tire swing, even though the light is completely different. The sun had come out by the time I had driven to the location of the tire swing a few miles from this house.

I saw this truck in a high school parking lot in Fort Wayne yesterday afternoon. I've seen a lot of trucks around here with Confederate flags and "Redneck" decals on the windows, but this is the first I've seen with a cow skull on the grille!

On Railroad Street in the small town of Uniondale, Indiana, there is an ancient 19th century building that was an auto repair shop for many years. The old retired mechanic who owns the place lives in an apartment in the back of the building.

This is one of the front of the old building. The Coca-Cola machine by the door is one of the oldest examples that I have seen! The glider rocker bench is identical to the one that sits behind the building, next to the entrance to the living quarters.

I posted some other photos of this place a few months ago, and finally got this last one scanned now.

Here's another portrait of Phil Luginbill, the barber who cut my hair when I was a young boy. He is still working after all these years! I shot this a few weeks ago.

Here is the last of the photos I made of the barbershop where I went with my grandpa to get my hair cut when I was a young boy. The chairs and wall are unchanged from when I went here to get my hair cut as a young boy more than 20 years ago! The only thing missing are the piles of National Geographic magazines I used to read while waiting for my haircut.

These trees were in a field on Yohne Road in southwest Allen County, Indiana. I photographed them many times over a period of nearly a decade. The night before I made this photograph, there was a freezing rain that coated most of the Fort Wayne area with ice.

The trees were bulldozed less than a year after I made this photograph. The land was torn up all around them, and machines were digging out the field to create a deep hole. The Republic Services Landfill, owned by National Serv-All at the time, is located north of the field that the trees stood in, and the dump was expanded onto that land as well.

Puts me in mind of the barbers I went to as a child. He`d sit the small children on a plank resting across the arms of the chair. It was a big day when you didn`t need that plank and could sit in the chair like an adult.

Another new one from my archives: Seven years ago, I helped my aunt drive my grandpa to the small town of California, Missouri, so that grandpa could attend the funeral of a lifelong friend who lived on a farm near the town. While grandpa was at his friend's funeral, I wandered the town with my camera. California is a few miles west of Missouri's capital, Jefferson City.

This beautiful old house is on Wildwood Avenue, just east of Fairfield Avenue, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. An American flag hangs in one of the front windows of the house, which has been subdivided into apartments. It is in remarkably good condition, as most of these old homes that have been turned into apartment buildings are badly neglected by their owners. There is a sign on the porch that says "Wildwood Manor."

I photographed it a few days ago.
