If found Uncle Bill's comments about "technical brilliance" interesting; to each their own.
I have about eleven 50mm lenses; that is a tepid number compared to many around here. In comparison, I only own one 28mm prime, two 35mm primes, and two 90mm primes.
This has to do mainly with your subject preference, I believe. 35mm camera manufacturers in years past measured their reputation by their "normal" focal length's offering; I think this is why 50mm lenses (or thereabouts, i.e. 45mm, 52, 55mm, etc) are more diverse than any other focal length.
