the bastard 50mm lens in the leica line actually takes great pics as well...i think i've discovered "the glow" and its hiding in the old optics :)

nice! - was summar not a very early leitz patent - 191? - never thaught of it as a bastard lens - did yu have it on a ltm or M ? Cheers Ruben

well...bastard insofar as it gets often passed up for summicrons, summiluxes, summarits, etc.,

it is early...i think manufacturing begain in the 30s? (1936?)...the one i have is a loaner and i'm shooting it on an M2 with the LTM adaptor..but i am hunting for a user iiic or f....(see my wanting to trade my g3 thread :)

You know, I have a thing for 50s and I really don't need another...

do I?

Rover, if "need" became my criteria for buying another camera, lens etc., I could pretty well forget about buying anything else for awhile....... a LONG while! I'm content to accept "want" as the operative word. :D

I would buy a Summar if one came along at a good price. I had one years ago and took the attached picture with it. It has the Leica glow (that those less charitable would call flare.) It is a perfect lens for dreamy atmospheric shots of lovely nude women. (My old dog was a lovely lady.)

the summar i have is a loaner...i'm going to give it back when i receive the summitar i won from ebay (hopefully tommorrow)..hoping it will have the same glowiness that the summar has :)

anyone here shoot with a summitar? how do you like it?

Frank, I see what you mean. There is an otherworldly character to that shot, as if it surfaced from memory, not a negative.

Thanks Mike, and it's a crumby scan - you should see the print. So what Leica M did you get yourself into?

I bought an M4 off photo.net, Frank. It's embarrassing, in a way. I mean, I'm new to RFs, at least in this decade. Had some extra money and jumped on it. Not a deserving thing. But I felt the need to revert to meterless manual. Now it's my eyes, my M, and a little Sekonic in my pocket ...

Thanks, Frank, for the encouragement. I'll post something this weekend to the gallery. I've got a lot of learning and relearning to do ...
