Was at the Leica camera site and just checking the Summarit-M lens and what did I see.

The Leica CL posted with one of their new lens. Seems kind of odd to post a camera the company killed off as it was taking sales away from their other models at the time, but now posting it as they figure there's enough owners out there to advertise to.

Although they have a 30 & 50mm. Curious as to why they don't create an original 40 mm lens. Or is it that many of the M model cameras don't have 40mm frame lines?

DON

Dear Don,

Alternatively (being equally cynical), they're saying "You don't need a Leica M to use this lens. You can put it on a Voigtländer or a ZI," with the CL standing in for non-M Leicas.

As for "many of the M model cameras don't have 40mm frame lines", try "No M-series camera has a 40mm frame..."

Cheers,

R.

That new 50mm Summarit, on paper, seems like a natural fit on a CL. Not too big, not extraordinarily heavy, not faster than the rangefinder baselength can tolerate. Again, on paper, it looks like a real good travel fifty.

I may get a chance to try one on for size at a tabletop demo in December.

In that link, the CL appears with the Summarit 35mm, which is funny as the CL has no 35mm frameline. This looks like the work of an art director... who knows what things look like but not how they work. Meanwhile I use a 35mm on my CL all the time and just allow for a slightly larger shot than the 40mm frameline is showing me.
