It has a serial number greater than 3,000,000 and it has a T.
I guess, it is a post-War model then.

The colors are quite warm, shot with Kodak 400. The negative was scanned using a Nikon Coolscan V ED.

I don't recall exactly what f stop I used but I think it was more like f11. The actual printed photo is a bit sharper than this downsized sample. Thanks for your comments. I was quite surprised with the quality of this old uncoated lens.

I have a 5sm f/2 sonnar lens that came on my Kiev 4A Contax copy (black Contax, CZJ logo). Haven't shot anything with this rig yet, but I wonder how the lens would compare with yours. Has anyone here shot with this lenses? Anyone know what "sm" stands for? Thanks.

I have read that the "5sm" is a translation mistake made by trying to copy the
"5cm" of a Zeiss lens into Russian (cyrillic) characters.

thanks, I wonder if the lens is basically the same as the Zeiss Jena... or maybe the glass was even made in Jena and just assembled at the Arsenal factory. maybe I should post in the Russian RF forum and see if anyone knows.

This is quite interesting. I don't have any lens with sm in place of cm.

I once had a fake CZJ Sonnar that had 5sm on the lens- it was obviously a late manufacture black J-8 that someone had dressed up with a false front bezel. It was a decent lens, but I ended up giving it away to an RFF member because I already had a bunch of genuine Sonnars, and didn't really need it. The lens arrived with a Bessa R2C that I picked up on eBay.

Mark,
So the 5sm has no collector's value?
What a bummer!

Naren, that lens is not a real Zeiss lens

You purchased a dressed up Contax camera (I also have a black Kiev 4a type 2 camera with exactly the same lens and the Contax name on the front and Carl zeiss jena) with a Jupiter 8 lens which says sm when it should actually be written cm (5 cm). This is not the same as the lens that I was referring to which is uncoated and a pre war lens. The Jupiter 8 is also an excellent lens but produced in your case in the late 80's.

My lens on the fake black Contax (Kiev 4a) also says Carl Zeiss Jena 5sm but its a fake (jupiter 8). Not a bad lens, quite sharp I would say. Its also a coated lens. I still purchased this camera mainly because I liked the black camera. I own a lot of Kiev cameras with Russian lenses and enjoy using them, and they have for me an historical value. All of them were inspired by the originals the Contax ll and lll which I enjoy using as well.

It is an illiterate translation of centimeter from Russian (см, сантимер - spelled in Russian like "santimetr"). That guy could handle an engraving pen but had no idea what "centi-" is about.naren said:Anyone know what "sm" stands for? Thanks.
