you're getting old, gear wars are so last year.... ;-)

The 7 is wonderful. The 6 is almost as good and cheaper, and I'm told has better noise performance.

Waiting for obligatory post saying you're all wrong the X-trans sensor in the X-Pro1 and XE-1 is clearly superior and with RAW editing can dominate the world.*

-- in truth the NEX-6 in my experience has a faster responding EVF delay from when you stick your eye up to it, and when it turns on (big deal to me, reason why I don't buy any of these EVF cameras)
NEX-7 resolution is outstanding, 24mp, even with the Zeiss 24 it still can get sharper and sharper, but the trade off is poor ISO performance, at 1600 I was encountering visible noise.
That's where the NEX-6 has a much better time, all the way up to 6400 worth, but i'd stay at 3200. Heck I shoot most of the time at 3200 with no annoyance.
I'm in the neither camp; haha.
I got an NEX-5n and it still gives me no reason to upgrade.
(for a ridiculous price of $350 with lens there isn't a camera that convinces me it's worth 1.5-2x-3x the NEX-5n yet)

The NEX 7 noise is not really 'poor', by any stretch.
And it's also not obtrusive when it does appear. 'Encountering visible noise' at 1600 - the horror!
It's a trade-off...the extra resolution can be quite nice.
There are other features that the 6 has that the 7 doesn't.
Hard to go wrong with either of these.
5n is excellent too, if you don't mind spending extra for an alien-head EVF or shooting from the LCD.

The NEX-7 is great, but due to the density of the sensor, noise performance is not great, I occasionally got noise at base ISO, you had to look for it though.

I think the alien-head EVF is fitting for the NEX series though.. (see equal hate!)

I just sold my NEX-7, it's a great camera, but I prefer film. I've not used the NEX-6, but I'd prefer less megapixels, so I'd probably go with the 6, the RAW files from the 7 are massive, and I'm not sure the difference is worth it.
The nice thing about extra megapixels: crop and still retain high resolution.

I got NEX 7 and love it.
It's bought when NEX 6 was not introduced yet.
Right now it would not make sense for me to down-grade, but if I was buying now I would get NEX 6. The extra 24Mpix. resolution does nothing for me, only makes files larger. While ISO above 3200 I could use quite often.
P.S. I printed 5Mpix. files in size 20" by 30" with excellent quality so the whole 24Mpix deal was not a main factor for me. But small camera with Leica and Zeiss lenses and good EVF was so i bought NEX 7.

I recently picked up the 6 and I had a opportunity to get out with it today.
It's fine camera. It handles very well and easily. I didn't think I was going to like the EVF, but in use, it is brilliant. The stock kit pancake zoom lens isn't too shabby, either.
The only concern I have is battery life. A second battery will be mandatory for a decent photographic outing.
This image is fine JPEG, not edited.

Don't forget the NEX-5R.
I chose it over the 6/7 in spite of their viewfinders because it is significantly smaller/more pocketable (and cheaper) and has touch-screen live view. For me, it's not about using a fancy touchscreen, it's that I can frame an image, zoom into the specific part I need critical focus on, achieve it, and immediately snap the photo. The 6/7 require you to either zoom to the center, achieve focus, then re-frame, or move the zoomed portion around with directional arrows.)
I chose it over the 5N in spite of its lower price (and largely similar performance) because the 5R has a programmable function button and a shutter speed wheel (like the two on the 6/7, but only one), which allows for much more pleasant and readily adaptable manual shooting. I think the older model would require a good deal more menu hunting, which I really dislike.
Ultimately, it was a close call for me, but I swung toward the 5R when I decided to think of this camera as a compliment to rather than replacement of my Canon 5D classic, which I still think has superior image quality and character. Once Sony or somebody else make a full-frame camera with the size, build, manual function, etc, etc, of the Nex-6 or 7, then I'll probably end up replacing both my bodies.
Of course, I have taken nary a photo with my 5D since I got the 5R!

The Nex-7 does not support M-Mount wideangles (I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet), while the Nex-6 does (no purple corners, no excessive loss of sharpness towards the corners).
So your choice between these two also depends on your lens base. I took the shortcut and got the Nex-5N for a good price.

I have a 5n and recently a 7. The interesting part is having to unlearn the 5n controls (no addiitonal control wheels) to make full use of the 7's interface. People complain about the UI on the 5n but you soon get used to it. At the moment, I am still using the 7's controls more like a 5n and largely ignoring the extra control wheels.
Either way, I enjoy both cameras and will try to find the alien-head EVF for the 5n.

And the 35/1.4 Nokton on an NEX 7 makes a very compact Leica M equivalent.

I've had the 5N, 6, and 7. Got the 5N first because of its excellent noise performance. Tried the 7 even though I knew it wasn't supposed to be as good in that respect. Sure enough it wasn't and I quickly resold it. There is a signicant noise difference between the two even at 1600. Since I shoot frequently at 6400 and even 12800, this is critical to me. I ordered a 6 when they came out. Noise performance on the 6 isn't as good as the 5N but still a lot better than the 7. The ergonomics of the 6 are better than either the 5N or the 7 so I'm mostly using the 6 although I haven't sold the 5N. My recommendations are:
* if you shoot much in lowlight, the 5N is 1st choice if you can live with the external EVF.
* if ergonomics are first priority, the 6 is easily the best.
* if you really think 24mp gains you much over 16mp and noise isn't a concern, get the 7.

I really can't decide between the NEX-6 and NEX-7. Low light performance is important to me, but the NEX-7 seems good enough. The extra resolution of the NEX-7 perhaps is overkill for the majority of my photos.
I have never handled (let alone used) either of these cameras, not any NEX camera, nor an digital camera other than an inexpensive point 'n' shoot (just so you know where I'm coming from). I shoot Leica M's with film and Contax T mainly.
I'm hoping you wise and experienced NEX'ers here on RFF can help me decide between these two cameras.
I plan to use the NEX-6 or NEX-7 with the 16-50mm zoom for when I want total automation (and for when my wife uses it as a point and shoot), and for myself, specifically with a Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron ASPH (my one lens, all-around kit).
TWO things are very important to me:
(1) which of these two cameras would get the most image quality out of the 28mm Summicron? Basically, can the NEX-7 handle the 28mm, or is it too wide? I would love to hear from anyone who has used this exact lens on an NEX camera.
(2) which would handle better in terms of nimble, manual AE "street" shooting with manual focus (focus peaking) with adapted Leica lenses. Which has the better user interface for quickly changing ISO and shutter speeds?
Perhaps I should add that I don't plan to use any Leica lenses wider than the 28mm Summicron on an NEX-6 or NEX-7. If I want wider I will buy something like the Sigma 19mm or the Sony 16mm.
I imagine the following small travel kit as a kind of digital Minolta CLE:
(1) 16mm or 19mm lens
(2) 28mm Summicron
(3) 50mm or 75mm Leica/CV lens
THANKS in advance for your advice.

Hi again, I thought I'd just clarify, that in terms of potential image quality problems with the 28mm Summicron on the NEX-7, cyna/magenta colour shifts would bug me much more than a bit of softness towards the edges.
I really don't want to have to go into Cornerfix all the time to fix colour shifts.

The Summicron-M 28 is certainly much better on the NEX-6. It works fine. I use the Elmarit-M 28 on NEX-6.
This is the type of lens that NEX-7 doesn't seem to do so good with. From your specification you should stay away from NEX-7 and choose a NEX-5N, NEX-5R or a NEX-6 as they are the best with rangefinder lenses.

Exactly.
Wides are crucial on aps-c, and the best wides are M.
The Sony 10-18 may be good, but I don't think can really compare with a zm18, or the cv 15 and 12.
To my mind the 5 is still the best-small and much better build, but if u want the built in evf would get 6, and put the savings into glass.
Let's just hope the new FF will support wides better than the 7.
