Sony rumored to reveal full-frame NEX-FF on September 24th

Much bleating above. Not surprising. Nex has been controversial here. Sony not admired. Whatever. All I care about are results. That will be clear soon enough. Performance with 28 and wider M mounts is what matters to me. Doesn't need to equal M240, but it's got to be good. New sensors, so who knows?

By the end of the month: 1st FF alternative to M9/240 2 models, same basic body, 24 and 36 mp, center EVF, small, e-mount. Get ready for thread explosion when they go up for sale.

Names: A7 and A7r. Both are weather sealed. No IBIS.

I just can't get excited over Sony stuff. I use a RX100 II because it is really good... but I hate the feel of it. Sony's feel like consumer devices instead of cameras a lot of the time. I hope they prove me wrong this time, but they won't.

Excellent! As much as I really do love my Sony gear -you expressed some of my underlying feelings very well. Hmmm...

Kudos to Sony for continually pushing the envelope.
FullFrame mirrorless should be commonplace, not a single manufacturer monopoly.
Wonder if the A7r would have the same sensor as the Nikon D800e.

dunno if uhoh's link above gives any more certainty than previous rumors, but would be nice to see it true. M9 is still beyond reach for me, or put it other way, don't value it enough to pay the price. and I much prefer to crop in Photoshop than with aps-c sensor crop. first reasonably* priced ff-mirrorless that can adapt M-lenses gets my money.

* for me, $1000-1500.

I felt somewhat the same towards my RX100 (Mk I) at first... but eventually, I grew to like it. I now enjoy it as much as any of the other cameras that I own. To each, his own... :)

(Apologies for going OT)

This is why we are not going to see any FF non-DSLR camera in reasonable price range and with bayonet .
Who wants to sell camera bodies for Leitz glass? Where is massive array of old not expensive lenses, which gives much interesting results comparing to modern ones.
With mirrorless FF it will be possible to benefit from old SLR and RF glass, double trouble for manufacturers.
Maybe Sony will still do it, because they are not lens manufacturer.

There is no such thing as a "Sony feel", sorry. Sony makes a ton of different stuff, and much of it has little in common with the rest of it. So, whatever past experience you had with Sony, it's meaningless here.

The A7 will cost about $1600-pretty sure that's body only. Current adapters will allow any m lens to be attached.

That really leaves only one question: how does it do with my ZM 18? The 5n takes quite good pictures with that lens, so it's no foregone conclusion Sony is going to bungle it.

Also, the A7r has a different sensor, which will either be better or worse.

In January a bigger model, still much smaller than the 6D, will be introduced with IBIS, and the ability to focus from the sensor.

I'm no fan of Autofocus, but what this means is that you will be able to autofocus your M lenses to some degree-only on that January model. That camera will certainly be lighter than the M240. So it could be a real contender for stealth Street shooting of extreme quality.

It really doesn't matter how you "feel" about Sony, the only thing that matters is how good is the gear. I would think by now they have some credit for innovation coming, but not much around here :-(.

The nex 5, 6, and 7, are excellent cameras capable of superb results in a small form factor.

The RX-1 is a new benchmark.

Regardless of local snobbery, I like Sony right now. :)

Leica, on the other hand, still cannot even get their product into shops. A year after announcement m240 still basically unavailable.

On top of that, leica is blind to huge market for smaller sans-rangefinder live view EVF body for m lenses. Something the size and weight of the original Leica. Price around 5K.

But Sony may push them there.

What is interesting is that the latest rumors are now pointing to a omd like body as opposed to the nex6/7 style.. Some say it is due to the Olympus ibis design that they picked up for it.

But no matter how compact the body, ff lenses ae going to be very big unless we are talking rf lenses. Look at how big the Zeiss or Sony lens are on the nex6 body as a comparison.

Anyway while I am not interested in purchasing this camera, it is still very interesting to c.....

do any of the rumors talk about the lens mount?

will it have the same NEX mount?
or will FF mean a new mount ?

Stephen

Last rumor I heard, it was still e-mount like the nex. Your old nex lenses are suppose to end up cropped like the nikon dx lenses on the ff dslr was the rumor I heard about a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway, just a couple weeks away for the reality.

There certainly is a feel to their cameras and it's not just snobbery. I stated that I love the rx100 I even though I don't like the feel.

As for my previous agreement regarding the Sony feel... I own three Sony cameras and a fair amount of E-mount native lenses, etc... and I will very seriously consider the new FF line. I love their products and their take on photography. Oh, and I still agree with jsrockit.

No offense intended.

I have Rx100
I have Nex-5n

I can't think of a single thing they have in common.

For that matter, aside from menus, the Nex-7 has little in common with the Nex-5.

There is no "Sony Feel", sorry.

Looks like the A7r will have no AA filter, and has microlenses tuned for wides----that last I can hardly believe, but we have all cried about it, so.......

Ok, let me rephrase it then... the feel they have in common is that they all are ergonomic nightmares with convoluted menu systems... ;)

This. So much. Who cares if you have a small body if the lenses are huge?

Maybe those who are watching this stuff can explain this to me.
I wanted to get myself a Zeiss 24/1.8 for my Sony NEX7, and been waiting for new FF Sony to make this lens less attractive to the crowd and therefore cheaper. It was $899 just few weeks ago, and I almost got my wife to agree with this (ridiculous to normal everyday person really) price.

Come to find out the price jumped to $1099.
What the heck happened, or was I dreaming all this time?

In complete agreement, and it extends beyond cameras to other Sony technologies (radios, e-readers, mp3 players).
