Or the aternative is you deliberately started this poll knowing that it will lead to a discussion that will ease your own fears of spending three grand you know you can't really afford!

One lemming off a cliff never works ... we all know that!

:D

i am not that devious...i am a simple man.

600 is what all the websites are posting for that external evf. They changed the mount contact interface between this camera and the nex5.. If I could have used the nex5n evf, I might have considered it (but an awful big might at that). Built evf would have been for me the way to go, now that it is in the coat pocket category..

I think that price is for the Zeiss OVF not the Sony EVF

Cut and paste from Steve Huff site 600 for evf and 450 for optical from following link

Pricing and Availability

The Cyber-shot RX1 compact, fixed lens camera will be available this November for about $2800.

The FDA-EV1K electric viewfinder and FDA-V1K optical viewfinder will each be available at launch for about $600 and $450, respectively.

The thumb grip, lens hood and jacket case will also be available at launch for about $250, $180 and $250, respectively.

I think it is an interesting camera. Sony probably did their hardest to fit all they could into it. I bet that there will be an interchangeable lens model by late next year. Problem is, Sony really needs to get off their a** in terms of lens offerings. I read recently that Sony and Olympus are in partnership now. Quite possibly this will bring some interesting new products as well.

Could not agree more when it comes to their Nex series, more camera body releases than lenses..and mainly another consumer zoom until recently. The only reason I still have my nex5n is for the universal digital back... The menu system drives me crazy and that video button is so badly placed I did the hillbilly fix on it. The menu system of the Sony rx100 is a bit of fresh air...

Compare that Fuji, they went after the serious amateur market by offering prime lens first before they released their first zoom. Their prime lenses are extremely good and reasonable priced given their iq.

Even though the rx1 is not for me, I applaud Sony for putting this camera out there and pushing the envelope for what should be expected in the p&s category..

If this was going to be the only fixed 35/2 lens, full-frame camera ever to be built... ever... then maybe the price could be justified. But look... the cost of full-frame sensors is falling pretty rapidly now. How long will it be before there are a handful of other similar cameras? A year, two? And by then the price will be half of these prices.

FYI fwiw from Sony rumors site here is their vote so far..

Correction... Not decidedly different. My bad I misread. It was a vote for a ff Nex instead. I found a different site with a rx1 vote similar to ours.

If I wasn't saving for a potential Full Frame NEX, then yes, I would buy it. I can't buy both though, so ... ):

Companies price their products according to the CURRENT market conditions and situation, and according to that, this is the only Full Frame 35mm f/2 fixed lens camera ever made ... ever. Thus, it is priced accordingly.

i was so going to try and save up money to eventually get this camera (or any better camera that comes out in the meantime), but.............................

last night there was an infrared converted camera ending on eBay that i just couldn't pass up, so that was like $500 (after the shopping spree that ensued after the initial purchase) out the window right there.

realistically, i doubt i'll ever be able to afford the camera, even if i would like to add it to my arsenal.

No for me, but clearly it's a YES for Joe.

Joe will buy one very soon after it come out, then sell it.

I'll say it: NO!
100% electronic cameras being what they are and given the brief lifespan of spare parts availability, the term Zeiss 35mm paperweight takes on real meaning.

I rarely ever use the viewfinder -- electronic or optical -- and if it performs well enough, the price will be quickly forgotten.

Or to put it another way, I have ordered one. :)

It seems like most people have the same concerns I do and I am less than seriously thinking about it. The reason is primarily the price (though I'd love a built-in viewfinder). If it were under $2,000 (especially with a viewfinder) there would ne no question. I know there are certain advantages to the Sony, but still, one would have to at least consider a Leica M8 with Zeiss 35mm f2 (interchangeable) for around the same price, or a 28mm if the 35mm equiv. field of view is necessary.

I'm done with pre-orders and other reasons previously stated.. no.. Getting excited, once again, about B&W film. back and forth.. all for fun.
