specs for the upcoming Fuji X-E1 mirrorless camera:

As one who rarely uses the OVF in preference for the LCD -- Yes, I'm one of those people! -- I would have preferred to wait for the X-E1 and kept $700 in my pocket than to have bought an X-Pro1 on its initial release. What's done is done, though, and I have no regrets.

Fuji is eating Leica's lunch in this category. This is what Leica should be doing if they want to remain competitive. That, and releasing Leica lenses in other mounts. That, and designing high-quality/high-performance lenses (in other mounts) and turning grunt production of said lenses over to Panasonic entirely.

Unfortunately, Leica does not want to supply the masses with gear. They want to supply a certain niche and no more. Too bad, as I'd love to try some of that glass someday, but I doubt that day will ever come... unless of course I want to settle for some of that fake Leica glass found in compact Panasonic zoom lenses. 🙄

Sorry Keith, I don't know who made the photo... but it's a lady (I believe) getting hit by the roo so hard that the hasselblad she was using flew out of her hands. 😀

1. It's not as though the AF performance of the X-Pro1 was in any way kept a secret. Seriously, if you bought an X-Pro1 and were disappointed that indicates either an inability or an unwillingness to read reviews and forums. Or it indicates that you bought one on day one of release. And I have no - zero - sympathy for that particular variety of early-adopter complaint.

2. For many kinds of shooting the X-Pro's AF performance is totally adequate -- especially with the XF 18/2. I'm happy with mine. I'm getting the photos that I want to get with it. Occasionally I miss but that's true with my DSLR and my M bodies, too.

3. What, you expected that they would not iteratively improve a brand new (opto)electronic product line?

The X-Pro1 is my favorite camera. That doesn't mean it cannot be better. Fujifilm improved the X100 with firmware updates. Why shouldn't I expect the same for the X-Pro1 (despite it being a different camera)? As for your other assumptions, I leave those alone.

The 18mm is faster, but I tend to like the 35mm more. We all miss at times, but I miss more with my Fujis than I do with the M or Canon 5d. We all don't photograph the same way or expect the same things. I'm only speaking of moving objects obviously. Sony and Olympus can implement fast AF in mirrorless cameras, why can't Fuji?

I don't expect them to make the little brother have faster AF than its supposed "Pro" older brother in less than a year. Replacements or totally seperate models I can understand.

I don't know why it upsets people to talk about improving a camera. Nothing I'm saying is not fact. If the X-Pro1 had AF like the Nex-7 or Olympus OMD, or even better like a modern DSLR, the X-Pro1 would be perfect for me. For ME...

No reason they cannot do both. They have amazing skills and hard to see why they would not embrace the whole market, not just the tip of the iceberg. They seem to want to grow (new plants etc) and they will soon find that once on the "growth treadmill," they will have to ramp it up every year.

The x1 and x2 are surely mass market tests as are the various P&S models they offer with Panasonic electronics. So they have shot at the bottom and top of the market, but the big numbers are in between. I think they have to take some risk and move on it or they will be sidelined and/or bought out and repackaged.

It is still a very small company compared to most camera brands. They do well in the luxury market and it has found its niche. If they try to compete on price, they will most likely fail IMO.

The X1 and X2 are not mainstream cameras... they are only sold in real camera stores, not department stores. The panasonics, sure... but they are still panasonics, not Leicas. These aren't even sold in electronics stores... only in camera stores.

If they become a consumer company, they will be done way before if they stay a luxury company.
