It is still a very small company compared to most camera brands. They do well in the luxury market and it has found its niche. If they try to compete on price, they will most likely fail IMO.
The X1 and X2 are not mainstream cameras... they are only sold in real camera stores, not department stores. The panasonics, sure... but they are still panasonics, not Leicas. These aren't even sold in electronics stores... only in camera stores.
If they become a consumer company, they will be done way before if they stay a luxury company.
You could well be right, but my sense is that they are moving this way, but slowly and will wind up caught in the middle with small revenue.
I actually hope you are right. The best of all worlds would be for them to continue as a great luxury brand but with the best technology and get out of all other markets.

Fuji has more models of compact camera at more lower end price points than all other manufacturers.
They primarily define themselves as a consumer camera maker in their investment literature. Their defining photographic revenue streams are not their high-end products, though this is shifting over time as compacts give way to smartphones.

Now that they released pictures of the back it look much like a cross between the X100 and X-p1 minus the OVF. The arrangement of the back reminds me more of the X100, the front of the the X-p1. If I had not gone for the Nex-7 I might have got this...

It appears to be closer in size to the X100 too.

Here are few updates to the previously posted EX-E1 specs:
- X-E1 will use the same 16MP APS-C “X-Trans CMOS” sensor as the X-Pro1 (max ISO of 25,600)
- The X-E1 will have a 2,360k dots OLED EVF with a 1:5000 contrast ratio (similar to the Sony a99)
- The optical part of the EVF will have a double ASPH element and diopter correction
- The X-E1 body will weight 350 g (compared to 450 g for the X-Pro1)
- The Mic input of the X-E1 will server also as electronic camera trigger

The best camera is one that still works!
That looks a lot, lot better in black.
I could like that ... reminds me a bit of my old Hexar RF!

This camera looks like a NEX-7 killer. I canceled my X-Pro1 and purchased a NEX-7 and don't regret that decision due to the fact that I use the NEX for both video and still.. overheated video. Of course, the NEX-7 will be replaced and now maybe sooner than later. I hate Sony customer service. On that account, I think that Fuji, a company with photographic sensitivity is heads above Sony, which doesn't seem to have any customer sensitivity at all. My next system will be full frame. Good move Fujifilm.

This is more like a lighter, leaner, faster and cheaper Xpro1 without the OVF to limit its use with zoom lenses. And of course this one has a diopter adjustment - another improvement over Xpro1.

I think it's starting to look like a very good camera. I hope the EVF is snappier (less lag) than the other models though.

Please let the refresh rate be vastly improved so that the camera is more usable in low light.

If this is true, looks like maybe the oled that the Sony Nex 6 is using is going to be in the new xe1.

I'm quite shocked at the lukewarm response to this camera, but then I did some research and the reason could be that Fuji film has released four RF_looking_cameras including this one in a span of 19 months!
Fuji X100 Feb 2011
Fuji X10 Oct 2011
Fuji X-Pro1 Feb 2012 (Holy! already replaced)
Fuji X-E1 Fall of 2012
And there are rumors that there will be another one announced for release in 2013.
Talk about making hay while the sun shines, or in other words until gear-buying fatigue finally catches up with disposable cash and credit balances.

X-Pro1 is not replaced by the X-E1... but yeah, too many cameras in a short period of time.
Where is the lukewarm response?
The X-Pro1 hasn't been replaced.
If one counts up all the mirrorless NEX, Olympus/Panasonic and Samsung offerings in the past couple of years, it amounts to quite a lot of cameras. But this is the 'new normal.' It's not like mirrored cameras or point and shoots or any other category are any different in this regard...these are computing devices, after all. Technology moves onward...
