spot metering on a budget

I did not mean for you to buy it but thought you might like to see what one looked like. Sorry if you misunderstood. I have one of those spot meter attachments and rarely use it. I also have an old Soligor spot meter that is very large, similar to a small blow dryer, that works very well but is a pain in the backside to carry.

Bob: Zone VI made a holster for spotmeters such as the Soligor and Pentax. Attached to a belt, you would be mistaken for a plainclothes officer who was carrying. On the elevator of the building where I maintained a studio one day, packing my Soligor in the Zone VI holster, a fellow tenant (a dentist) spied it and said,

"Is that a gun? You don't scare me."

This was a weirdo guy who, at one point, had nearly killed someone by misapplying nitrous oxide. Previous to that, he had tried to extract one of my teeth without taking an x-ray first because he was out of developer. I ended up going to an oral surgeon, who found the roots were all twisted together and the dentist would have had to extract the entire jaw to get that tooth.

On the elevator, he didn't recognize me as it was many years later, but then I'm not sure his memory was any good anyway.

I just smiled. Luckily he soon retired before he killed someone.

The lunapro SBC has a variable angle attachment mentioned earlier and a multibeam spot attachment with 1, 5 and 10 degree options. It attaches directly to the SBC meter. I have seen them on the bay for as little as $50 to $75. I have one, and it works beautifully.

I have one of those. It plugs into the front of my SBC meter and works very well. According to my Orion Bluebook, MSRP on the multibeam attachment was $665.

I had one of the clip on 7.5/15 attachments and didn't like it.

I trust incident readings more than spot meter readings and usually use a Luna Pro F with the dome.

geez, i just hate when i get dopey...and i must have been dopey last night when i was playing with my meters.

i took both lunas outside today, took a reading of a grey wall in bright shade - the readings were the same.
then, i put the spot attachment on each meter and took readings at both 15 and 7.5 degrees. at 15 the readings were basically the same as with no attachment but at 7.5 they both read about 3/4 of a stop less light.

this time i moved the dial and adjusted for the red and green settings and i'm thinking maybe i didn't do that last night...hence the dopey.

and i want to thank my saturday shooting buddy russ for pointing out that the meters can be zero'd. this ended the discrepancy problem between the meters i thought i had.

i feel so much better now...

I have about the same readings with mine. However, at 7.5 degrees, it is more like 1 stop. I'm not entirely sure why. My sbc is about one stop different from my Luna Pro. I need to reconcile that.
