Spouses Attitude Toward Photography

My wife supports me in my choice of habits, hobbies, and interests; as I do hers. We're funny like that - a married couple that love each other and support each other completely.

I want to grow up, marry someone, and be as smug as that.

Karyn was aghast at the negative leaning of the poll questions. I was just going to let it go but she is my partner and we wonder is the division of married interest such a reality? Are relationships like Roger and Frances, Karyn and I such an oddity?

Married people don't always have the same hobby and it can be okay. As you can see there is a wide range of responses. Only a few abhore photography, but not many have married fellow shutterbugs.

Most people's spouses fall somewhere in between: they want to be supportive, but have some limitations regarding the amount of time or money spend on photography. Some of the options in between were design to be a little humourous, yet reflect some reality. In hindsight, I could have added some that may better represent potential opinions, like "Is generally supportive, as long as it doesn't involve spending $2000 on a lens" , or "Is generally supportive, but has his/her moments of frustration."

My wife likes photography like me. And also she likes RF cameras and this forum. We both have accounts here.

My wife does not like photography but then a few years ago she went to Tibet for her research and took some great shots. I encouraged her to continue but since that she never used a camera. It's a real shame, I think those shots were really good, what do you think?

My wife is supportive of my photography, but has no interest herself in it. I'm supportive of her bookclub and scrabble passion. After four grown children and several grandchildren we get on well with each other as long as I do no developing or expose any of her precious grandchildren to photochemistry when they are visiting. 🙂 Fortunately, she's a late sleeper on the weekends. :angel: All my granddaughters have learned to develop black and white film early on Saturday mornings. 😀

My wife constantly gives me photo assignments for the local Catholic network. She gets annoyed when I shoot black and white film. She can't focus a rangefinder. She's just not able to.

She wants me to get rid of my enlarger(s) -photographic (of course😀). OK. OK -have just got 2 in the last 6 month, and have not used them (house undergoing extention). However, once house finished enlargers to go). pleased to let one go....maybe 2 ...out of the 4.5?😱

gf probably thinks my photo hobby some sort of curiosity, but is sometimes interested if we start talk about it. this doesnt mean she is in risk of getting addicted. pressing one button in Sony P&S, another in Picasa "I feel lucky" is as far as it goes 🙂

My wife loves my hobby and brags about my pictures. She never complains when on vacation and I decide to wait an hour or so for better light. She's great.

She also doesn't seem to be quite completely aware that I own 4 Ms - 3, 5, 6 & 7, and 9 Leica lenses in addition to the Nikon F2AS, 3 Nikkormats, and a giant bagful of Nikkor glass. Did I mention the collection of Voigtlander folders and RF's from the 50's? I better give most of it away before I die. Good thing I have lots of sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews.

I am very lucky in this respect. Tuulikki loves photography as much as I do and due to our "business" we can indulge in it to our hearts content. We do shoot every day, not necessarily together - but we both find that a day without a picture is a bit of a wasted day.
She is strictly digital these days - and color. I do the black/white. She does have multiple Rf's and keep threatening me to unearth them and start using my lenses!!!!!
Only one in the household who is not interested in pictures is Mr B (the cat) - though he does like to chew on RC prints.

My wife has accepted my full-time hobby [photography] as a fact of life. She likes the photos that I take, and she compliments me on those images. Sometimes, when we go out for an afternoon car drive, she would say "can't you once leave the cameras behind?", but she knows that I have to have a camera with me.

Polyethylene is a long chain polymer from the same building blocks as fats - and accordingly slightly smells like lard, cocoa butter or stearine. I.e. it has the signature of food, at least for cats...

My wife's response to my photography ranges from mild amusement to active encouragement. She went to art school and works as a graphic designer, so she has been exposed to lots of photography and works with it regularly.

As an aside, even if most the options in this poll are meant to be a joke, they're condescending and not that funny. I'm happy to see that most people chose the same option I did.
