Happy Holidays RFF'ers.

I'm in Sri Lanka for a week starting on Dec. 25th. I'll be in Colombo, Kandy and Galle. If anyone has any advice on the best markets or areas for street photography, please let me know.

I just went to the "thieves market" in Mumbai today. It was a street photographers wet dream (mine at least).

Dude, been to Sri Lanka few years ago. What a beautiful place! Galle and Kandy are amazing. I won't be able to give you specific places to visit but:

1. In Galle, stay within the old city walls; really picturesque and with plenty of weirdness to photograph. Walk to the seaside to see young people jumping off city walls and lovers hiding behind umbrellas... If you walk around the town at night you will most likely stumble upon the market they sometimes have, and while it's small, it's quite interesting to see. Galle is great for slow, peaceful moves around town. It's not too noisy. Be sure to find Fazaad Badurden's cafe (for the love of god, I can't remember the name of the place - ask anyone) and have a breakfast.
2. I've actually been to Galle during the New Year's of 2010 - and if you are lucky, you might encounter the peculiar live market/show/outdoor celebration they're putting outside the city walls. It's fantastic, but it's mostly at night so not sure if it rocks your photographic boat. It did rock mine :D Plenty of live music and food. And everyone that lives in Galle comes. Craziness. In all beautiful ways.
3. Colombo - didn't like it. Noisy, dirty, but not in a nice, Saigon-like way. I found it sticky and obtrusive, and back then there was plenty of military activity around. It wasn't nice. Might be better now.
4. Kandy is wonderful. Wonder around the temple area, and if you spend some time in neighbouring streets you will walk into many tiny shops and markets. Make sure you go to the central market that's near to bus station. You'll find it by the smell, since they sell lots of fish that travelled for a while. Be prepared for no other tourist in sight so move quickly - Bresson mode on! :D Real Asian market experience doesn't get any better than that.

You will love it. Sri Lanka is a great place. One of the best trips I've had. Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice! We just got back to NYC earlier today. Sri Lanka was amazing. I shot a bunch in the Galle Fort. A really romantic spot (cobble stone streets and Portuguese architecture). I also liked how it was predominantly Muslims living there. A change from all of the Buddhism (which I also enjoyed of course).

The beach in Unawatuna was really great. A nice surfer atmosphere.

Kandy was great as well. Unfortunately it was raining the majority of the time. In fact, there was an evacuation of many people (in the tens of thousands) from northern-central Sri Lanka due to the flooding. Lots of people lost their homes. Kandy wasn't impacted so negatively though. We complained of the rain and how it impacted our vacation but many people lost their livelihood so we quickly bit our tongues.

The temples in Kandy were nice as well. Sri Lanka is a great place to visit. So glad I did. Many of the locals were interested in where I was from. I probably heard "Where are you from?", three to four times a day. I think they are really happy that many from around the world are visiting their country. That goes hand in hand with the war being over of course.

would love to see the Mumbai photos..

I've got some rolls of 220 to develop. Will need some time to scan.

Unofrtunately I didn't get to shoot as much as I would like to have but I have some shots I'm hoping are keepers. :).

would love to see the Mumbai photos..

Here you go!

Of note - everything was taken with the Fuji GW690 mkiii. And she worked wonderfully. Film was either Portra 160iso 220 or 400iso 220.

I really like those photos. Just a nice sense of place and, somehow, an unhurried thoughtful feel to them...I know it's only a few images but it looks like how it must feel to be there.
Thanks for posting.

Kind of you to say! There will be more soon :).

Also, while I was satisfied with the 90mm lens of the GW690, while on a boat in Kerala, I was left wanting a longer lens. This has made me consider the fuji GL690 with 180mm lens but the 2.5 meter minimum focusing distance seems to be turning me off.
