Stand Development: can I use a single roll steel tank?

Hey guys,

I've never tried stand development before but I've seen some absolutely amazing results with Rodinal and Tri-X.

I only have a single roll steel tank (250mL) for 35mm. I plan on doing 1:100 dilution, 60 minutes, 68F, with one inversion at 30 minutes.

Is this enough volume for the procedure?

I've only tried stand development a few times, but used a tank size and Rodinal dilution as you suggest. Worked fine.

This post rang a bell, and I just looked up the Adox Rodinal "homepage". Here is what it says of high dilutions:

"When using high dilutions and small developing tanks please make sure to apply on each film 35mm or 120 at least 5 ml of concentrated developer."


I have done stand development with 3,5ml concentrate in an Ilford tank which requires minimum 300ml for 135mm film, that works fine. But I would be careful not to test this with a film that is important to you.
 
I do this reguraly, but what I do is mix up 500ml at time and use half of that for each roll/Single steel tank. Make sure you mix is up good before pooring to start with, I'll suusiallyd 5 inversions at the start too to make sure it's Ok.
 
2.5mL of Rodinal concentrate is too little to reliably develop a roll of 35mm film evenly. Note ‘reliably’ and ‘evenly’. It will develop your film. And it might be even, maybe most of the time, but eventually you’ll take a roll in bright pale conditions, or something will differ and your film will be blotchy. 3mL is the minimum Agfa mentioned in the old days and 5mL per film as per the Adox literature is better.

Ok so I developed the roll before reading all of these comments...the experiment was very approximate.

I measured 3mL and 297 mL to the best of my ability.

some more. for some reason the uploads are really small. the grain is very strong and the photos seem kind of "old-time"y

Haven't used Rodinal but in HC110 Tri-X gets more grainy as the developer gets more diluted. Was very grainy stand developing it at around 125:1. TMxax looked really nice that way though.

Rob, Can i ask why you decided on Rodinal? One of the upsides of stand or semi-stand development is edge-effect & sharpness, I'd wouldn't be looking to increase grain, especially in high-speed films. (I don't do much stand development, but a reasonable amount of semi-stand and divided w pyrocat)
 
For 35 36 exposure film I use 6 ml Rodinal to 600 ml of water.

Agitate for around 10 seconds at start and agitate around 10 seconds at 30 minutes.

Develop for one hour.

I was mostly looking to increase sharpness, but I don't see that outcome in my experiment.
 
I too use Rodinal for Stand but I have to admit I only use it for weird, unknown films I don't know the "normal" development times for. All other films I use the recommended times at 68 degrees and 1:50 dilution.

Hint: For Stand development, I turn the tank over and let it sit upside-down halfway through the development time. Keeps streaking to a minimum.
