Steve Huff - GXR vs NEX-7

Welcome to the magical world of early adopters, where flooded factories pale against the emotional distress (some use the world "suffering") that comes with waiting a bit beyond one's preorder delivery deadline and having to deal with badly informed call centers in the process.

Louis CK dealt with the general phenomenon rather nicely, I thought.

What did you think of the indoor shot in that series?

I'm driving myself quite nuts trying to decide whether to buy a NEX-5N and EVF or a GXR, M mount and EVF. The former is cheaper.

You mean this shot?

I didn't even notice that one---talk about 3d

That camera will be superb I believe--though obviously performance on some wides is uncertain.

It won't have any trouble with the elmarit 28, i'd bet. My nex-5 loves that lens.

I say get 5n, and compare 7 when it comes out. Sounds like a bunch of us are on that program.

Not to dis GXR--it looks really good. But the nex is way more versitile, better LCD and better EVF.

You can shoot ANY lens on the nex. Bokina, nikon 180 ED ais, Kilfit 40 macro, whatever you want. I think there is even an ALPA adapter.

this thing works great:

In the end I decided to go with the 5N because I know if Sony lets me down on Friday I can walk a five blocks east of me and pick up one over the counter. It can be serviced in Canada. After having a dead X100 that's important to me now.

The GXR can't be serviced in Canada but is covered under warranty in the U.S. and Canada, serviced in the U.S. which is less convenient but good enough. But the key piece - A12 M mount unit - isn't available anywhere in North America at present and is already trading on eBay at 50 to 70 percent more than it should be and earlier today Ricoh put out a notice that the flooding in Thailand is in fact affecting production of that very module and perhaps others in time.

Certainly flexibility played a part in my decision. And the fact that I have a Hawk helicoid adapter sitting in my camera bag waiting for an E mount camera to slap it on also mattered somewhat. Oh and some spare batteries were already on a truck somewhere between New York and Vancouver... thankfully the battery packs are the same for the NEX-7 and 5N (and I guess all the NEX?).

Besides, GXR seems due for a refresh.

If the NEX-7 happens to ship the following week that'd be fun comparing the two. Sony Canada still hasn't said it won't, although they did tell me yesterday, en francais so I'm fairly certain the info actually came from the Canadian customer support group, that the delays so far are due to parts availability and logistics, which is something I'd not heard elsewhere.

Update: Something quite unusual happened on the Sony Style order information web page - my NEX-5N order went from 'Processing' (very familiar with that status thanks to the NEX-7) to 'Ready for Shipment'. I guess they really do have the stuff. Unfortunately the estimated shipdate got moved to 14 Nov from 11 Nov but maybe that will prove meaningless.

Whatever... I'm just glad to have something coming in. Fingers crossed the edge performance is ok enough to keep it for now.

Maybe in 2012 someone comes out with a full frame compact we can mangle with RF glass. Or APS based cameras that handle RF glass well, no need to be greedy.

PS: When you talk about your SLR lenses, what's the "good stuff"? What are your favorites?

SLR I start at 20
nFD 20/2.8 nFd 24/2 nikon 28/2 ai FD35/2 thorium usual 50/1.4s 55 micro, then I'm all rf till 90 bokina, 105 kiron, 135 a bunch like everyone, then pentax 150, nikon 180 ed ais, oly 200 /5, nikon 300/4.5 ed ai, leica 400/6.8, and kilfit 600.

Misc other stuff

Or fd 85/1.2

Anyway tried to do my homework ;)

Nice. I was long ago told the nFD glass came alive on NEX. I wouldn't mind finding something at the wider end like the 20mm as well as the short tele (old school 85mm).

Other than that am not hungry for too much at present although a fairly compact and wide angle-ish (M or LTM to keep the net length down) lens would be very handy for day-tripping lightly loaded. I too would like to find a nice 85 or 90mm to fill the gap between my cheap 135mm and ubiquitous SLR 50mm's.

Well this is actually an incredible lens on the nex:

75/2.5 CV Photozone had a bad review which keeps prices down :) 250-275.

and here is what the FD aholics say is the best they ever made:

hard to find though and around 275 or more.

But for your needs here is a little jewel:

The sharpest of all the skopars, the 28/3.5. The 25 is also great, and cheaper.
