The following items were stolen from my car last night/this morning (7/8 Jan 06);

Leica M7, black 0.72x
Leica Tri-Elmar II, black
Voigtlander CV 75/2.5, black
Voigtlander Classic Nokton-M 40/1.4, black
Voigtlander Heliar 15/4.5 & vf
Leica Lens carrier
numerous 35mm films
.. all in a Leica Billingham-M bag.

The b@stards have cleaned me out :( and it seems that my useless car insurance policy won't cover the theft :bang:

What's worrying in that the car was parked on my driveway, in Folkingham, Lincs, UK and that someone was prowling around my house.

Anyone being offered these items should contact the UK police immediately - the two main Leica items have also been reported to Leica's missing dept.

Keep smiling everyone - I still have house, job, health, and a beautiful wife and son ...

OMG  And not insured? Get those models/serial numbers out there as soon as possible! Same thing happened to Todd, I think it was last year and also in his driveway as I recall. After that, I decided never to leave anything valuable in the car...

My heartfelt commiserations... :(

That sucks!

But once again a reminder for all of us to check our insurance policies and see if these items are covered.

aw man, that sucks! and yes, it's the standard these days for insurance companies to exclude commonly stolen items.. cameras, stereos (especially cds and dvds), computers, radar detectors.. a separate insurance rider usually needs to be taken out to cover all your assets.. insurance companies really know how to cover their asses

Sorry to hear that. But you're right - at least they did not break into your home.

I am sorry for your stolen equipment. I once had my apartment burglarized, and for whatever reason, the only closet the burglers did not break open had all the cameras and lenses in it. I started a no-fault personal articles insurance that covers most of the better equipment I own. I don't kow if there is something like it offered in the UK.

is there any provision to your home owner's insurance policy that would cover this?

Very sorry to hear of the theft of your camera gear. I had my home B&Ed last year so I know the feeling. I think you might have some coverage under your home owners policy as the car was in your driveway at the time of the theft. Anyway it is worth a look. Good attitude BTW.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about it. If there is anything I can do, let me know. I am just North of you in Nocton.

Kim

Thanks all - I'll get over it (eventually).

I need to go and practice looking even more sad than I am to attain max sympathy (and funds) from Mrs C.

there is a special place in hell for these scavinging cowardly bastards...

do you have anything left to shoot with?

So sorry to hear this news.

My vehicle was broken into 5 years ago with items taken valuing a bit more than my $500 deductible homeownwer's policy. It was not worth me trying to claim.

You likely have "replacement" value insurance on your home and contents. They have accepted your premium payments for a good number of years - every year stating you are covered for big amounts for loss and liability. Examples might be $1,000,000 liability, $300,000 home and contents. You have paid them $15,000 over the last 20 years with minimal to no claims.

What I am getting at is do not be shy to make your insurance company come good for the whole replacement amount, less deductible. This may be one of your first problems of any significance. The insurance company is morally and ethically up the creek without a paddle except some fine print no one would ever believe was in the documentation. "You mean my cameras are not covered for $10,000 ? Why did I pay you for 20 years. Please do not try to weasel out on the one time I need you".

You paid your money and you are insured. They should pay and not run from their responsibility waving some fine print about not covering "valuables" up to certain limits. (hypothetical numbers) They sold you a $300,000 policy. You have $290,000 worth of stuff remaining. I honestly do not believe any judge would side with the insurance company - even if he was a shareholder with his retirement nest egg invested with them.

Remember - at best you will only get a portion of what you have paid into them. They have collected compound interest on the first dollar you paid.

Excuse this rant but I would be considering the above if it happened to me.

That was my thought. Hopefully so.

Really sorry to hear that. Makes me think I should remove my little lovelies from the trunk of my car. I don't keep much there, but what is there I really am fond of. Hope it is recovered in goot shape and the sorry so and so's are caught and punished. Meanwhile, I also rejoice in that you and your family are safe.

/Mount soapbox/ Certainly for our house, but also for our car as our next most common personal abode, there is a certain sense of added safety. Our home is our castle ... When either is broken into, there is an extra sense of violation, above the loss. Suddenly we aren't safe from the Vikings after all. I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else here, but if it does, realize that is an added emotion you will have to deal with.

Talk to friends and/or family, or even get professional help if necessary. No shame as it is a common thing, just not talked about much. Almost like rape, we assume it was our fault, and our violation must remain ours to deal with. Not so! /Unmount soapbox*/

You have my sympathy; I'm trying to imagine how I would feel in your situation. I can't get into town 'til the end of the week but I live in Grantham and will p.m. you the numbers of some of the local secondhand/photo dealers. It's a long shot but if these characters don't know what they have got they may try to sell locally.

Sorry to hear that. I'lll keep my eyes open here in Essex.
This may be a timely reminder to all never to leave anything more valuable than a rusty jack in an unattended car.

Sorry to hear that :( Best of luck with the insurance and with trying to locate the items if possible. I agree that it's a good idea to check ebay more closely than usual.

That's all you really need in this life . . . the health and job and family . . . .but that is REALLY sad. You never know, though. Perhaps it was for the better. Maybe, if it had not been stolen, you might have taken it out in two days to shoot something happening in town and been killed in a car accident. Now that future has been changed. Now, that future shows you at home with the family, a new camera awaiting your purchase somewhere in the UK.

Things work in mysterious ways.

I second this. Really sorry to hear about your misfortune but they are only things and they can be replaced. On the plus side, you will get the opportunity to revisit all the decisions you made before acquiring what you had (nowithstanding the cost).

General Question

Do we have somewhere on the site that we can list stolen stuff, serial numbers, pictures etc? Given that a large part of the second hand market is here, we could at the very least make sure that anything we are offered is checked against it. Just a thought.

Gid
