Stop It Now!

I think the M5 just about sunk Leica without any help from the Internet. It was only the M4-P made in Canada that brought it back from the brink, or so the lore goes. Funny - The M5 is my favorite M body but it is totally unlike any other M.

The M5 and M8 look homely...

I dont think it was made clear that the M5 bombed, although I was not interested because the M5 looked so ugly..., I was upset my wide angles had bits milled from their mounts, for the M5, (and CL).

Earlier an AP article of '58-'59 or so made quite negative comments about Leitz announcements - about the M2 and one of the lens , the M2 was cheaper missing self timer, the lens was not to be available in screw mount. I think AP had a serial article about things at leitz. Alas my memory from the '50s is fading a little...

I thought the idea of an announcement was to post, then lock the thread, to avoid all these meaningless posts attached.

Meaningless posts!?!?!?!

I think Leica pulled off a major accomplishment in getting the M8 out in such a short amount of time.

Actually Leica had been saying that a digital M camera was--to quote their own [translated] words-- "impossible". Then Epson announced the RD-1, and maybe a month or less later Leica made the announcement triumphantly that "new technology" had been found/discovered/made available (forgot the exact wording) and that work would begin on a Digital M. So perhaps Epson/Cosina is to blame for not making the RD1 a year or two earlier so as to give Leica more time to perfect the M8.

I quit reading the M8 threads, mainly because I can't even think of buying one. But if I had the ready cash, I'd buy one in an instant.

Not that I'd get rid of my M2 though :)

I will let you make up your own mind:

Edit: This must be why they call it "camera porn".

I stay away from most M8 threads because I dislike digital cameras. Why cause friction in a crowd of people who love digital photography.

Joe: I have no hidden agenda, so I speak from the heart. If I were turning into a professional photographer, I would definitely be reading up on digital cameras to buy the best suited for my work. I have the luxury of being able to choose, and I happen to be impractical (maybe) by choosing film.
