I don't really read them either. There were one or two about lenses that I read. Haven't missed much apparently.flashover said:I haven't been reading the M8 threads. Now I know why.

Me neither. Nobody is scared of digital here. It is a matter of choice.

Okay, my mistake.
Okay, my mistake.
I just thought you sounded a little more than defensive in saying that film was better.
I take pictures with whatever I have, whichever fits the situation better. It makes absolutely no difference to me whether it's film or digital.
It's the image that counts...
I hope we all can see that...........................

ps...sorry if I misinterpreted you.

Film, digital.... photography hasn't been the same since the end of the wet-plate process. Those plate-glass negatives were just beautiful, and the old f/11view lenses produced magnificent bokeh.

Film v. digital reminds me of arguing whether a hammer is better than a screwdriver. Tools are tools, chosen for specific jobs. One can pound screws with a hammer, or use one hour photo with photo CD to get pictures on the web in an hour. I prefer hammer and digital in this obviously silly example.
I shoot both, and I'm not afraid of either. It depands on what I'm doing. YMMV.

Tests conducted at MIT in the 1920's demonstrated that screws driven in with a hammer held substantially better than screws driven in with a screwdriver.Al Patterson said:Film v. digital reminds me of arguing whether a hammer is better than a screwdriver. I could claim that that shows that things a never as obvious as they seem. Or note that once you've mangled the head of the screw with a hammer you can't get it out again.
Truth is how many chances do you get to drop a actual fact like that into any discussion?

... can we then conclude that using film in an M8 actually results in higher quality images? Maybe the MIT people can prove this wisdom.

I support this get-tough policy.
I have expressed my (unpopular) opinions in the past and have been slammed in the public forums and privately. Adding certain individuals to my ignore list made reading some threads tolerable.
So as long as the mods are prudent and reasonable in the face of a possible offense, I think their action is justified.

Any post that is counter to the thematic discussion of the thread is basically hijacking, and potentially trolling, especially if it is negative. Nothing ruins the experience here on RFF more than participating in a thread that genuinely interests you and having someone jump in and start thrashing around, bashing, arguing and preventing any progress in the thread.
We should always try to picture the real-world equivalent: a group of people are sitting in a room discussing something of interest and some idiot walks up and starts yelling, baiting people, knocking stuff over, and causing people to get up and leave. I can't honestly believe that anyone wants to be that person. Don't be that person.
The original poster sets the theme and the subject. We should all read the first post in a thread and try to address that post, first. If you can't add to the discussion in some positive fashion, that keeps it on track, then don't post.
Good job, joe.

I'm contemplating an M8 for my upcoming 50th Birthday. Even if it makes my computer catch on fire. But that probably can't happen twice to one person...
Would settle for an RD-1, I have a small collection of old Digital Cameras.
<snip>
I don't read the M8 threads because I'm sick and tired of all the cheap shots. I'll be glad to see something done about them.
Maybe my M8 shots are crap, but cheap? Sheez!
But hey, I've been hit by a massive tax bill. I think the M8 may be on the chopping block.
I never heard of a computer catching on fire, btw...

Better stop. Bad jokes might not be worse than cheap shots, but they can lead to puns and limericks, and haikus!
Sort of for the record, I want an M8 (I want a Leica and the M8 is a contender). Now that my wife made it so very clear that I won't be getting a motorcycle any time soon I can actually afford one. This is a lot scarier than just coveting one. Cutting down on the chaff makes useful info easier to ferret out.

yeah...I was going to point out that the M5 current was/is essentially hijacking, but then commenting on that would make me an accomplice...oops. cuff me.

It's fine with me if the RFF M8 forum turns into the love-fest I've observed on the LUG forum.

I am trying to understand the relavance of "Pass the Kool-Aid please" being applied to some situation or another including people owning and discussing an M8. If it is a reference to the lemming like behavior in Jonestown, Guyana it is in my opinion inappropriate.
For disclosures sake - I own two M8s. I neither love nor hate them, but see them as a means to an end that I can relate to when shooting.
I have learned a good deal from the very productive threads on the M8 forum here and find RFF to be a cut above the other forums with Leica forums because it is moderate.
Kind Regards to all. Terry.
