Sorry if this belongs in optics, but I've only noticed it happen on my M2. I've had two photos with this strange flare in the middle of the frame. Seems a bit strange. I'm using a CV 35mm f/2.5, and both shots had the LV-4 hood attached.

Anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on? There is a very tiny nick on the edge of the hood, so the paint has peeled and you see the bare metal. Could that cause this? It's a pretty tiny mark, but I really have no other ideas what might cause this.

Maybe you caught a "rod" on film 😱........there's an interesting documentary about "rods," people think they are forms from the 4th dimension capable of appearing and disappearing at will and at very high speed.

(well not really, they're just optical illusions for small things like dust or insects that cross very close to the lens but are moving in such a way that they aren't "frozen" in the frame due to too slow a shutter speed)

or maybe it's flare or internal reflection.....are you using a filter?

Hoods for the most part do a fine job but you are shooting into the sun and therefore are bound to get a bit of flare.

The spot on the hood won't cause it..

No filters. The sun is just over head in both shots, so it is possible it's good old fashion flare. It just struck me as an odd mark. Thought it might be something else. Thanks for the ideas.

nope, it's actually small bugs or dust that fly very close to the lens, when paired with a high speed camera that take more frames per second, you can actually see that it's just a moth or some small bug but is distorted because they are moving too fast for the regular camera to capture it in the frame as a still object. pretty neat though.
