Maybe not failing (though that does happen, even w/the new M), but they can wear through surprisingly quickly if you have modern split-rings going through them.
I have also heard of them coming loose. If they are still firmly attached and in good shape then you are probably safe. I believe they are riveted onto the body shell. Joe
Yes, they are firmly seated (but a bit brassed on the outside after only 73 years). The camera is not very heavy, and I use round rings (took off the original ones) so I think I am in the clear.

If they are only a bit brassed after 73 years, assuming constant usage patterns, you should be good until the 25th century or so, methinks. May be hard to get film.
