Street Gurus

'urban photo artist'?

I say just photographer. A great photo is a great photo no matter what label you put on it.

Heres some words by Winogrand about 45 sec in and continues through about 1:45 or so...

And words by Adams which I totally agree with.
"Let us hope that categories will be less rigid in the future; there has been to much of placing photography into little niches-commercial, pictorial, documentary, and creative(a dismal term). Definitions of this kind are inessential and stupid; good photography remains good photography no matter what we name it. I would like to think of "just photography"; of each and every photograph containing the best qualities in proper degree to achieve its purpose. We have been slaves to categories, and each has served as a kind of concentration camp for the spirit."-Ansel Adams

Love this - "Becoming a street photographer can be a great hobby. You can donate your pictures to museums and websites, or you can start your own website."

I might add that you can start your own workshop and have people pay to listen to you spew forth gospel, that a "real" photographer" would gain just by being out there, dedicating themselves to making pictures.

It is too bad that someone like Vivian Maier didn't leave any writings on what she thought was doing, how she felt, who she looked at, who her influences were, etc..

Vivian Meier also left behind many audio recordings of her thoughts - most on the news stories of the day and her thoughts of them, but you could gain a lot of insight from them all the same.

The excellent documentary film "Finding Vivian Meier" delved into this.

I just watched this on TV the other night. I remember the bit about her audio recordings, but don't recall her speaking about her work on them. She didn't work in a vacuum though. She knew what was going on in the world.

There are quite a few bloggers out there who call themselves "masters" of the street genre. One posts so called "Street Pills", sayings, quips, that pertain to some knowledge of the genre.

While I'm no prude, I thought the latest "Street Pill" was over the top. From his blog titled, "Nasty". A blog that professes an anti-aesthetic attitude for stark contrast and lots of gritty grain. An aesthetic that can be interesting, but I find his images quite lacking.

Your thoughts?

...gee, thanks for sharing I guess... I wish there was the equivalent of mouth was for the mind. I'd like to remove this image from my head before I like down.

Thank goodness I don't need any of his pills to deal with the juicy city (insert crass joke about 2.8 zoom lens).

I agree, Dan would make a good mentor.

Dan came to my mind as well.

+1 for a street section along with mentors.

For better and worse, street photography has drawn the attraction of the cool kids. This means the old timers start ranting and people will want to distance themselves from it.

Anywho, I really like how much enthusiasm there is for street.

I don't think there needs to be any "mentors" or polls. I believe the whole issue of "mentors" is wrong. One can argue one's street cred and I wouldn't want that to be an issue. I believe we should have a place where we, hopefully, can exchange ideas, thoughts, discuss issues, and discover.
