Cienfuegos, Cuba 2011 - I was on the second floor landing of an apartment building when this young lady came up the steps. I asked her to pose by the opening in the wall. When I was finished, she thanked me for photographing her and proceeded up the stairs.

Apopka, FL 2004 - Apopka Furniture is an old time "buy here - pay here" independent store. This was Friday afternoon when everybody was coming by to make their payments on the TVs, appliances, and furniture they have bought.

Cueto, Cuba 2013 - This permanently unemployed sugar cane cutter lives in housing once provided for workers by US sugar companies before the Triumph of the Revolucion in 1959 when everything was expropriated by the new Cuban government. The Cuban government operated these facilities until 2002 when they cannibalized half the sugar mills for parts to keep the rest operating. Now unemployed workers such as this live in their old housing with basic life necessities provided by government social programs.

South Apopka, Florida 2006 - Keisha Johnson and "her kids". We had an interesting discussion in a photo ethics class about the need to mention that while she is raising these five and refers to them as "her kids", she did not give birth to all of them. Some she had informally adopted from other family members. And, how our decisions were influenced by the fact she was black and from a poor negro community.

South Apopka, Florida 2006 - Ms. Johnson, grandmother of Keisha Johnson from previous post. Also part of the photo ethics discussion about the need to mention her smile is a result of her severe dementia. This was from a "Community Portrait" project I did back then.

This photo was the promo piece for my exhibit "Cuba y Sud Apopka EE.UU - dos culturas similares" or "Cuba and South Apopka US - two similar cultures" at Galeria Carmen Montilla in Havana. It was a mix of photos from both places where you had to read the caption to learn the location.
