From time to time I have had to deal with stuck filters/step-up-rings and it isn’t fun. I have read about ways to un-stick them from using ice cubes to blow torches and trying to release one can be daunting. So I thought I would try to find something that might prevent them from sticking in the first case. I needed something that would not be oily, not migrate and repel dirt. I went to Ace Hardware and bought a 4 oz bottle of DuPont Teflon Non-Stick Dry-Film Lubricant (Part #DNS040101/DNS104101) for $5 and have been testing it for the last month. I use it sparingly and have found that it seems to work. I haven’t had any real issues with any stuck filters or step-up-rings. I’ve had one that was slightly hard to unscrew but only needed moderate effort to undo. As a bonus I have found that several of my “less expensive” step-up-rings that used to feel gritty now go on as smooth as silk.

Never met a stuck filter that wouldn't come off when wearing a pair of surgical gloves.
It does seems eventually that the Teflon lubricant will sooner or later end up somewhere where you don't want it.

Another way is to get either a smooth soled running shoe or a piece of thick inner tube - place the filter face down on rubber and while pressing down with moderate pressure unscrew the filter. Always works for me and I keep a piece of the inner tube in my bag.
An important Q is why is it stuck in the first place? Put on too tight? Damaged threads? or ???

Why not try to prevent it from happening rather than fight with it after it is stuck?

I just put a rubber band around the filter to allow a good grip when unscrewing. Force you exert against the ring when trying to get a good grip tends to distort its shape, making it bind and stick. The rubber band gives a good grip without much force.
The rubber sheet is good too. I use a rubber jar opening sheet from the kitchen drawer.
