Series VI Filters:
I finally dug up a step-up ring to use on my Canon 50mm 1.5 LTM. It is 40mm --> Series VI. I want to use a UV filter on it, but what filter thread screws into series VI? It seems like 45mm or 46mm (which I don't have).

I seem to recall that you're supposed to drop in a threadless filter sandwiched between that step-up ring and another Series VI. But why can't you just screw in a UV filter directly into the Series VI? I don't really understand the point of Series VI... :bang:

Hi,
The filter drops in and can either be held in place with a filter ring or on some cases the hood. The whole idea of the series system pre-dates the Cokin system. The idea being that you have one set of filters/hoods and then you can use them on any lens with the right adapter. Many lenses were not threaded so screw systems were no good but you can get clamp on series adapters so your system is good again. The filters are drop in because they are cheap to make that way.

BTW, the correct Canon hood for this lens uses a series VII ring 😉

I had a similar question recently and got this reply from a dealer who specializes in Series adapters,

The 605 does take a series VI filter. The interior part of all series VI rings is 44mm across. A series VI filter is about 41mm and fits inside the 44mm opening then the retaining ring fits around it and holds it in place. I have an Ednalite series VI ring No. 616 listed in my store. It has a 33.9mm rear thread. It would probably work on a 34mm thread. Ednalite made series VI rings with rear threads all the way up to 48.6mm. I guess that would be a step down series VI adapter ring.

I have a Canon Series VI hood marked for the 50mm/1.8 and 35mm/2.8. I am currently using the hood on my 35mm/2.8 with the 34mm to Series VI ring mentioned above.

I think the answer to your question is, "They don't make that filter size." Or at least they are hard to find. I can't find 34mm filters. 43mm & Series VI are Special Order only from B+H.

Cheers!

There isn't a correct screw in filter. The diameter is about 45mm but the thread pitch is different. If you want to use screw in filters you need a step up ring not a series adapter.

Do you know the correct screw-in filter size for Series VI?

You need a Series VI retaining ring which usually comes with the Series VI adapter. A Series VI lens hood would work also.

Sometimes I use a 135/4.7 Optar with my Speed Graphic. The slip on filter adapter takes a Series VI filter.

B&H sells a 44mm to 55mm step up ring that works like a charm on the Speed Graphic. Handy for me since my old Canon SLR system uses 55mm's.

If 55mm's are a bit large for your rangefinder...

B+W and Heliopan filters are available new in Series VI by special order. They're also available on the used market, though selection tends to be limited (typically, red, yellow, green).

Worse case, I suppose S.K. Grimes could probably fabricate a custom alternative like maybe a 44mm to 46mm step-up or a new slip-on that goes right to something more readily available like 43mm.
