Summicron 35mm ASPH and Internal Reflections

Hi all,

So, finally got around to taking my first night pics with my relatively new M8 and my not new Summicron 35mm ASPH. Several of the shots show some internal reflections just opposite of bright light sources.

The attached picture has this just to the left of the church tower.

Is there anyway to get around this? Should I just use a longer hood for the night shots?

A hood will make no difference if the cause is a bright light source in the frame. That is not light that a hood would ever be blocking.

Assuming you were not using any filter, I don't think there is a way to ensure these reflections do not occur. If you were using a filter, it is possible that you are seeing light reflected from the front of the lens onto the inside surface of the filter.

Flare, reflections, curtains, et al, usw....

Yes, much progress has been made. Pick your own math for your statistical analysis. Since the adoption of lens coating I think improvements have been made, and from my camp I would say on the order of 25% to 35%.

Don't expect too much from the ballyhoo about flare resistance, it counts for VERY little if 100% resistance is the desired goal.

Flare resistance counts for 10% in making a choice on the next lens I will buy. In my world if the lens was made before 1960 it very well may be better for my work than the latest and greatest.

Be happy with you new baby! I surely would be. I know to use Photo shop and your pimple on the *rick of progress is easily taken car of in Photoshop if it bothers you that much.

I think the performance of your new baby is fantastic.

Hi Matthew, I was shooting today and I realized that the filter was probably the cause of this. I will try again either tomorrow or Wednesday night without the filter. Of course, since I was taking pictures with the M8, I just automatically had the IR filter on.

I'll post soon.

ps.-sorry about that awful white balance... I was too "focused" on the reflections...
