Hi

I have a chrome Dual Range Summicron 50mm, serial nr. 1400***. It comes complete with the goggles and both lens and goggles have the leica leather cases and the original front and back caps. It's also got a 39mm Leica UVa filter and a Leica Green filter. All are in excellent condition, the lens is smooth and looks optically clear and I can't see any fogging or fungus when I look through it.

The question I have is (and I hope this is an okay place to ask) - what's a fair price to ask for it and will the inclusion of the goggles etc make much of a difference to what I can ask?

On ebay they seem to go for wildly differing prices, in the US from approx $250 ish upwards, in the UK it's a real mixed bag but somewhere between £200 and £300 looks to be the norm. I'd far prefer sell via the classifieds but before I post I don't want to sell myself short or ask too much...

Thanks and apologies in advance if this is an inappropriate question

They do sell for a wide range of prices. $250 sounds very low. In good condition, with clean glass, goggles and the case I would think at least around $500 is possible. The lower prices that you have seen may be for lenses without the goggles, I think that does make a difference in the market.

Whatever a fair price, I wish I had the extra cash to make a deal with you, Woffle! Even without an M body, I'd like to have the lens again (I had one in the mid-80s), in preparation for that inevitable day. 😱

I bought one of these a few months ago with the goggles and case and paid very close to $500.00 US which seemed to be the going price for a good one. It was a one owner and the glass was perfect so I was happy to pay that price!

🙂

If you're around London, Joe, it's worth giving Patrick at Aperture a call for a rough estimate for commision sale. I'd think with those accessories included you might be selling yourself short. Deduct about 20% from a shop estimate for a realistic private sale price. I don't usually find Evilbay a reliable guide to price.

Shine a tortch (flashight) through it to be very certain there is no haze on the elements,
Often the summicrons can seem clear and fine when you look through them, but light up like neon signs when a light is shone through them.
It's not a huge deal if there is haze in there, easy enough to have cleaned- but good to disclose.
Classic leica prices seem a little depressed of late, I suppose with the M8 coming or something. They always go back up though. Once the M8 flops (it can't do kodachrome) the prices should rocket back up.

Yours is an early one with the softer coatings.

I would guess that the lens with the caps and goggles (with excellent glass on the lens and no seperation in the goggles) should go for $450-$600 depending on the overall cosmetic condition and whether a CLA is needed.

You should then be able to add for the case and filters. The filters should go at $20 each and I have seen cases go for $20-$100 depending on condition.

Best,

Ray

OK - thanks for the guidance. It's appreciated - I didn't want anyone to think I was fishing - it's just that I can't use the goggles on my M7 without performing some nasty surgery to them and I wondered whether the fact that unless you have an earlier 'matching' body they'll not be of any use meant they added little value to the lens. I guess not really.

As far as I can make out the glass is excellent with no discernible cleaning marks / dust etc - I've shone a torch through the elements and it all looks pretty clear to me (although I'm not 100% sure as to what I should be looking for). I guess as I can't see anything that it's all good though 🙂 The lens is in excellent condition - you certainly wou ldn't know it was 40+ years old.

The goggles and cases are in good condition also. What's the seperation mentioned in relation to the goggles.?

I'll think on it for a while (reluctant to sell) and maybe I'll put up a classified ad in the next few days when I can get some pics sorted.

Thanks again. This forum is a real pleasure.

Ffordes have one on their website for £275. That's what I would expect to pay from a dealer for a good one, I'd reckon to get close to £250 on a private sale without the extra bits. In the Christies sale a couple of months ago one went for £220 but you would pay buyer's premium etc bumping it up to £265 ish. The filters especially the uncommon green have a value too so you could start off asking £325?

Had you considered just putting it in the classifieds here? Or even just using it:angel:

I have been using it only I'm saving for an 75, prefer the ultron 35's length as a walkabout lens and so can't justify keeping the 50 (see my avatar for the reason why 😉 ) so I figure it's got to (sadly) go.

I'll post a classified tomorrow when I can get the digicam to take some snaps of the kit. Being relatively new to the whole Leica GAS thing I just didn't want to either post it at an unrealistic price or sell myself short.

Thanks for the continued suggestions. I figure £325ish is probably a fair ask.

Cheers

Joe
