Summicron-C 40mm Action

@ Maddox, Steve,

Lovely Photos !
The 40 cron/ rokkor is just so good, renders crisp, sharp , tres 1970’s signature,

When using a 40mm on an M-series, would you use the 35mm of 50mm frame lines?

Somewhere in between ? Guesstimate ?

The frame line selector on the M brings up the 50/75 frame line pair by default with the Summicron-C 40mm (and M-Rokkor 40mm) lens. Many folks I know file the cam on the lens a little bit so that it brings up the 35/135mm frame line pair because a 40mm lens FoV is a bit closer to a 35mm lens than a 50mm lens.

I've never bothered with filing the cam, I just shoot 'tight' with it on an M knowing that it will capture a bit more than I see in the frame lines. Of course, with M4-2 and most digital Ms, I can just hit the frame line selector lever to see the 35mm frame lines temporarily if I want to see the outer limits of what the lens will see... then I have to shoot a little 'loose' to be sure I don't inadvertently crop out something important.

I did file mine. The 40mm covers a bit less than the 35mm frame on an M2, M4, M4P, and M5. on the M6, M7, MP, and M9, the coverage is just about exact for distances of about 2 meters or more.

For me, the improved accuracy on the bodies I mentioned is my whole reason for owning a 40mm.

Personally I always shot with 35mm frame lines on both my M2 and M4-2, sometimes I thought about it other times not so much. Generally speaking I think it gave me better compositions due to filling out the frame better

Wonderful images in this thread!
It seems that price of 40mm Summicron is creeping up recently with some reaching prices of 35mm Crons.

Another happy user with the Summicron-C
I discovered it newly. Images taken with M240. I'm impressed about the overall sharpness. Better than with Rollei Sonnar 40/2.8 which I acquired in 2006 and was never really sharp, and flared worse. I sold this lens due to growing internal haze. This Summicron-C is still very clear, and the mounting is reasonable solid for such a lightweight lens of this age.

Thanks, Helen!

d.dulin: Thank you very much!

I did file the flange on mine down to bring up the 35 framelines on the M2. I think of 40mm as a slightly tighter 35mm lens and shoot it that way. BTW, 40 and 75 make a fine travel kit.
