I`m about to buy a Summicron DR without the closeup unit. I intend to use it on my M6 classic, 0.85. The lens is the "first generation". A friend of mine said it probably wouldn`t fit. Is he pulling my leg, or what ?

Can't help on teh lens, sorry, but just a small correction: if your M6 ix x0.85 - it isn't classic - it is M6TTL. Classic are only regular x0.72 (unless you customized it to x0.85, dunno if it is possible at all)..

Didn`t know that... It was sold as m6TTL, but when I got it, I saw the wheel to adjust shutterspeed was regulary sized, instead of the big wheel that I thought was the easiest way to recognize a TTL... It doesn`t say ttl on the hotshoe either. I don`t know... M6, 0.86 it is, that`s for sure!

AlexZ,
The M6 did come in a 0.85 viewfinder. Last year of production in 1998. Short run. Stephen(Cameraquest) had a running list of all of the reported ones. I had one.
Not very well known and the TTL came out the same year, so it pretty much went unnoticed.
Nice camera, but flare seemed to be more pronounced. The MP upgrade works well with this camera and makes it great.

1alfred,
I never tried it but if it works on an M3, which it does, then it should work on your M6.
Enjoy it. I loved mine. Sold it and moved up to the M7 0.85. If you shoot with a 50mm or above most of the time, it's perfect.

I believe the ttl is a couple of mm's taller than the classic. If it's a ttl you have to unscrew that little plastic stop block on the goggles to use them. If you're not using the goggles it doesn't matter. Guys, correct me if I'm wrong. Stu

Rigid Summicron is a glued lens to my m3. I sold all my other types of 50mm summicrons and kept this babe. You will love it.

If you don't need a close-up lens, buy the rigid Summicron instead.
(I have both, so i think i know a bit about) ;)
I also have both, and what the goggles do is give you a closest focus distance of <0.7M which can be really useful. The rigid however has a closest focus of 1M and that darned tab with the infuriating infinity lock.

I`ll check if I can try it out before the deal is done. I have an old Nikon F body that I don`t use. It`s a trade.

I believe Stephen Gandy states on his site somewhere that it doesn't fit, but details elude me. I'll have a look.

Edit:

"Compatibility: Leica has confirmed that the DR will not mount on all M6, due to internal changes of the film chamber. Try the DR on your M6 before you buy it, if possible. While the DR will mount on the Leica CL, Minolta CLE, the close-up attachment will not line up properly to these camera's viewfinders in the close focusing range. At least some DR's will fit and work fine on the Konica Hexar RF, with its near copy of the Leica M RF/VF. Pictured here is the earlier version mounted on the Konica. This is the only non Leica M camera so far that will allow the DR to work in the close-up focusing range. "

Edit II

Incidently, I own the DR myself with glasses, caps and yellow filter. Legendary.

About 3000 M6 Classic were made with 0.85 finders. I have one box and all.

My DR Summicron with or without the close range 'eyes' works perfectly om my M6 Classic.-Dick

Here is something else to ponder. My DR works fine on one of my M7's and will mount on my other M7 but the focus ring will not move at all?-Dick

Ok, thank you everyone! Looks like the seller was confused by the producton year, then. This must be one of the 3000 classics made in 98. What do you guys think of the trade ? A near mint black Nikon F body for a early chrome Summicron DR without goggles?

Are you selling the F with a prism. Remember that a black F prism (plain, no meter) is worth a lot of money in itself. Also early black F's are worth more than later ones. If there is a moter drive plate on the bottom, add another 100$. Plain black F body only, 100-200$. Early black F with plain prism and motor drive plate, mint, could be 400-500$. DR with no goggles is 400$ at most. What do others think, my estimates may be off. Joe

The camera is with the original non metered prism, no motor-bottom plate, serial number starts with 7378, and it looks almost brand new. I`d like to trade it for a 50mm that fits my M6. A Summicron, rigid or DR, a collapsible, anything sharp and hopefully quite fast.

yes!! and it's astounding!!
