Summilux 75 difference betweenn 1st and 2nd?

I am thinking of buying a used 75mm lux, and I found a near mint ver. 2 for about £1250 and a mint ver. 1 for about £1000, what is exactly the difference between the 1st and the 2nd?

Same optics. The current version has a built-in lenshood, the first version didn't.

Does any of you guys know if the lens is exceptionally subject to flare?
Is it possible to cheaply find a hood for it?
I am still trying to decide if ver.2 is worth £250 ($400 for our friends across the pond) more than Ver.1

Do you know leica has a beatifull new 75mm f 2.0 It's just one stop slower. Compact build and i bet it's very good even at 2.0

I Know, but I am the kind of guy that likes to shoot wode open, even in daylight I have often used NDs if the high shutter speed was not enough, I hear that they are not going to make a new 75 lux, and the old one is discontinued, so I though to grab one now before prices go trough the roof.

I have the newer lux, and I always extend the hood, but I have never had it flare. It controls flare very well. If you don't use the hood...well, I don't know. It does have a rather large front element, and I would want something helping to protect it, so the one with the hood would be my choice.

1000-1250 quid sounds like quite a lot though. I bought mine about a year ago from a member of photo.net for 1500 dollars (844 pounds), and mine was mint condition of the newest model. They usually sell for 1500 dollars or less on photo.net at the Leica forum. Perhaps you could try posting a WTB ad there.

Francesco, if you can, check the ease of focusing. I got myself a well-used version 1 with perfect glass, and the focusing ring is very smooth - contrary to internet lore.

Demanding glass, said to exceed Bessa/RD1 rangefinder accuracy (and not far from my limit with a Leica .72).

Not sure yet about the flare issue, I got some strange contrejour pics, but need to take more.

And type 1 spare hoods should be horribly expensive, because they were common with the Noctilux of the time! :/

Robert White lists the lens as discontinued, I consider it is a pretty reliable source.

Curious. Every other dealer I've checked (in the USA, Hong Kong and Germany) lists this lens as in-stock and available. The 75mm Summiliix is also listed on the Leica website. I wonder why Robert White can't get any? If Stephen Gandy of Cameraquest reads this maybe he offer some insight.

Hello:

The Summilux will give slight flare, with hood, in extreme contre jour situations. But it is extremely resistant to it. On the other hand, my Tele-Elmarit flares at the mention of being pointed into the light.

The only Summilux 75 I managed to get my hands on is Hektor's, it is in perfect condition, but I pretty much doubt John is going to sell me his.

It is a ver 2 so has the hood and is about £200 cheaper that what I can find in the UK.

Now, that's my kind of guy! I carry an ND filter for that reason alone. I need to find one for my 50 Summilux, though.

Exactly, stopped down 2-3 stops FSU lenses are just as good but much cheaper, no point in buying a summilux.

Congrats on your acquisition! I ordered one as well- put a deposit on a mint pre-owned one and will take delivery the 1st week of Dec.. I can't wait- I've had one of these before and really feel it has unique capabilities. It will complement my 35 lux asph. We'll both have to post some photos later on!

Congratulations on your new Summilux. I use a German made version 2 regularly; it is extremely flare resistant. My lens focuses very smoothly. The Summilux has not been discontinued. It is a wonderful lens.
