I had already been planning to buy the summitar, but after this thread, it's definitely confirmed.
I am just wondering what you guys paid/are willing to pay for one, coated vs. uncoated. I know I read somewhere online that the value is between $200-300, but is this accurate/fair?

MMilose3, I guess $200-300 for one in good condition is about right. I think I paid a little less then $200 for mine, but it does have its defects (slight separation at the edges of the front elements, bubble in the front lens and some cleaning marks).
Thanks for the comment Helen. The shadows are too hard on that shot. I like the result with my Anniversary 4x5 Speed Graphic with these two gentleman a lot more: here and here (then again, the Ektar lens and Summitar are two different kind of stars
)
Do you have a helping hand taking those self-portraits or are you using a remote release or a timer and a tripod?

I agree those prices sound right. I paid close to $300. for a near mint coated lens.I had already been planning to buy the summitar, but after this thread, it's definitely confirmed.

The Summitar gets a Ken Rockwell review http://kenrockwell.com/leica/50mm-f2-summitar.htm
and he's very complimentary. Mine is away at the moment, along with my Summar, being overhauled by Peter at CRR Luton. Both were a bit stiff in the cold weather we've been having recently. Fingers crossed!

Just got my Summitar and Summar back from Peter at CRR Luton. Wow! They both look like new (apart from some brassing on the Summar) with clear, bright optics. Literally an amazing transformation.
I'll post some examples as soon as I can get the film developed.

I cleaned the front element on mine and got rid of the haze, but remember to be gentle with yours.

Thanks for that. I had sticky aperture blades, so I removed them and cleaned them but now having issues getting them to slot neatly back into their holes.
Would love to know how they did it in the factory (on a production line!)

They probably had a jig that supported the blades. It's hard, but doable.
Note that the only way to safely clean soft-coated Leica lenses (like a coated Summitar) is chemically. Any physical method will remove the coating. I believe one uses a mix of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide. I leave the soft-coated lenses to professionals, after messing up a Summicron.

Actually I believe the mix is 94% distilled water, 4% Ammonia,2% Hydrogen peroxide. I've used it and it seems to work well but so can vinegar if it's not too bad.They probably had a jig that supported the blades. It's hard, but doable.
