It's true, Frank, and passion for the Star doesn't stop...🙂I have just realised that it has been almost ten years since you started this thread!
I use a generic 39mm hood coupled to a step-down ring, which I bought from Heavystar years ago. The barndoor shade is effective, but looks odd in my opinion. The Heavystar hood works just fine. I have two Summitars and have put step down rings on each, which allow me to use standard 39mm filters (and hoods) on them.

Which serial number your lens has?
Background gets swirly depending on light, aperture and distance.
Your pictures look like f5.6 or f8, usually no swirls at that aperture, in my exp.
But maybe, earlier units are more prone to produce swirls.
Mine is from 1949 and can get swirly.
