Which serial number your lens has?
Background gets swirly depending on light, aperture and distance.
Your pictures look like f5.6 or f8, usually no swirls at that aperture, in my exp.
But maybe, earlier units are more prone to produce swirls.
Mine is from 1949 and can get swirly.

I haven't yet been able to replicate the swirly bokeh in my summitar.

Hello friends, what lens hood are you coupling to yours summitar? Classic 12585 doesnt fix perfectly and i wouldnt want to lose it��

I use the clamp-on SOOPD (And the one for Summitar/Summicron, I forget the code), which grabs it pretty well.

I have the barn door hood but use it rarely. In my experience the Summitar does not like harsh light, so I prefer to use it when it is overcast or in the late afternoons. Then I don't need a hood. Mine is from the early 1950s.
I have just realised that it has been almost ten years since you started this thread!

I got hold of a barn door hood a few months ago and the couple pics up the page (#577 and 578) are with the cumbersome hood attached. I think the hood did help those examples. The hood closes up to a broad rectangle onto the lens to save a slight amount of space, when not in use.

I use a generic 39mm hood coupled to a step-down ring, which I bought from Heavystar years ago. The barndoor shade is effective, but looks odd in my opinion. The Heavystar hood works just fine. I have two Summitars and have put step down rings on each, which allow me to use standard 39mm filters (and hoods) on them.

I have the barndoor type, but in all honesty I find it a bit unwieldy.
The fact it folds up is useful though
I tend to use an IROOA, which with the Summitar filter fits OK, although not an absolute fit like on a Summicron 5cm or 35mm that's it's designed for.
Seem to remember reading somewhere that the Summitar hood groove shape/depth varies through the years of manufacture, so this might affect how well a slide on pinch hood fits.
