Sure are a lot of R-D1"s for sale lately

i was just thinking that myself.

it would be very nice to own one and play with it but i would have to sell too much other gear to afford one.

plus, i'm getting another dog this afternoon and that has helped to clean out the camera kitty.

my next camera will be a dslr though, so i can catch the pups in full flight.
 
The RD-1 ads are a constant source of irritation to me because I don't have one and can't quite justify the expense to my finance minister!

There is a big difference in what's winter like in Scandinavia and in Asia 😀

But unfortunately they are coming to common quite rapidly...
 
Well, yes. It's an out-of-production camera with uncertain future technical support and a 1.5x crop factor.

Reminds me of the advice about old motor-cars when I was a young man: "Sell 'er as a runner while she's still running."

I think the rd1 is long over due for a price dump. As nice as it might be for a 6 mp camera, they are getting on a bit and 1400 dollars to be the third owner on some of these sounds like a really bad choice. Now if they were sub 1000 dollars then it would look a little better but that's still a lot to drop on a used digital camera. I think a lot of people are dumping them while they are still alive then holding out for something else. I know I would do that if I had one which I had paid more then 1300 bucks for.

beg to differ. There are reliable repair shops more than willing to continue servicing R-D1's. Epson says they will stock supplies for another 6 years. Ergonomics on the R-D1 are IMHO superior to the M8. has rangefinder cred. get to use my lovely m-mount lenses and at 6 mega pixels I don't have to worry about the big pixel noise problem. Sometimes less is more.

One little thing. Because the sensor has less pixles then current generation 1.5x crop sensors and thus bigger overall pixle size does not mean you get lower noise. In the case of the rd1 less is just less. High density sensors with good on chip technology that you find all over now doing things that was thought impossble several years ago.....thats where you will find the more.
 
Maybe some of us just get bored, fool around on eBay and get lucky, then have to figure out a way to pay for our purchases ... that's my story.
 
hey there. i am one that paid $1400 two months ago to be the proud third owner and you know what??? i am proud! i am ecstatic! and whatever Leica may be coming up with, i could give a s**t! not to say i won't look at Photokina, but the R-D1 is a joy to use. i don't think i'll ever find such a gem again! will i look at others? of course! but i won't be one of the group that sells their R-D1 to finance something new and then spends the next several years moaning about how much i miss it... there will not be a fourth owner!
 
I kind of like that it is old technology. Helps me concentrate on photography. hell I wish it had even older technology, ie. no aperture preferred, maybe only one ISO speed. LOL.
 
I didn't buy the RD1 as an investment, so what it is worth is irrelevant. It is capable of taking just the same pictures today as it did when new. So no problem for me, but I'm not a gear head who always has to have the latest stuff - I'm still using an Olympus E1. BTW, I did a search on *bay and couldn't find a single RD1 for sale, so where's the big sale happening?

I'm a drowning man. I'm not selling. It's tough, of course. Whenever people look at my prints from the R-D1, I hear them whisper, "My that's just old technology." But fool that I am, I'll go down with the ship, taking my R-D1 and other old technology, like my Canon sonnar, with me.
 
3 RD1 on sale during a week, and here comes the big price drop ....
So next time we see 3 M8 in a week (2 last one), that means its doom is close ?
All of that is just wishful thinking, the ones that don't own just want to see the price go lower so they can get it for a good price. Personally, you could tell me the RD1 will lose 50% of its value tomorrow, I would not sell it. Not everything is about IQ, pixels and money.
Yet if Zeiss or Leica comes up with a good digital RF comes September, I will buy it but will hold on to the RD1. I did not buy the M8 because I found the RD1 way superior ergonomically as IQ is not my #1 criteria.

If you mean these 4 ebay shops, they are there all the time with 'new' epsons.

still the camera seems to upholds its value much better then all these dslr which continue to change each year and from what I read, untill now there is no good alternative. I was looking for the M8 but that camera has so much problems and considering the price. Therefore, if no alternative comes up, we must face that the R-D1 is the only cam next to the M8. Also consider that no cameramanufacturer these days wants to invest anymore in a digital RF camera... that is a pity really since I do not seem to enjoy a simple dslr with 12mp.
