A couple of days ago a fellow advertised on my local Craigslist that he'd like to buy a Nikon S or S2 body, and I answered that I had a spare. This is the reply I received:

"I would be interested in that Nikon S2 you have there....

"I really wanted one because I have a Nikkor 5cm f/1.1 and thought it was Nikon S mount for a few days until I realised it was Leica screw mount with a M adapter on it. (Which I can use)."

It turned out he had no idea the 1.1 LTM was one of the rarest of Nikkor lenses. I wrote to tell him and received a delighted reply. He'd just found out: he'd posted a picture of it on Facebook to show a friend and the friend immediately made him a modest offer of $4k.

The circumstances by which the person on craigslist came to be in possession of the lens and not know what it is has the makings of the find of the decade. Whether it was inherited or a chance find at a Goodwill store, etc. Any more background to the story?

I doubt that it was at a Goodwill store, unless it was bought at one quite some years back. They train their employees to look for collectibles and antiques and, when they are found, they go on the shopgoodwill.com Web site.

Yep, Gus really lucked into that one. I've been sending him links to different sites so he can learn more about it. I'm hoping he keeps it, but he is a college student, and could use the money from selling it to finance some other gear. Besides the fact that there were only 211 made, the aperture blades were prone to damage from too quick of a motion. Think how many have been junked because of that, and that should give you a smaller pool from which to choose from. I can see this as a multi $K sale. I hope he gets someone to help him offload it.
