Take a look at the NEW RFF Gallery

Gripes first ;0). All of the comments under my historic gallery pics seem to have been deleted - are they gone for good for everyone or will they get migrated back from wherever they've gone? Gallery comments are part of the history of RFF so it would be a shame if they can't be recovered.

Also is it really mandatory to upload camera details etc. or can they still be left blank?

Other than that it looks great and the increased size limit is a big plus - thanks guys!

Awesome layout now! I like it. And more functionalities. Thanks for the Upgrade.

Looking through the Info statistics I saw there is people uploading files with Noritsu QSS or Nikon Coolscan as camera make and model. Is this a problem coming from wrong EXIF data in the files? Or is all done manually?
I have to check by myself how it works with my mixed digital and analog (scanned) work in the next days.

All my "My Gallery" uploads have disappeared.

Edit: Ah! They're under "New Gallery". Easy to miss "New Gallery" when one's used to clicking simply "Gallery".

Nice.

All right, did some testing. Found that a few of my old scanned images didn't show the correct EXIF data (scanner rather camera metadata). I will correct those going through my gallery.

Still a question on data extraction (from EXIF) after upload. My image
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/rffgallery/showphoto.php?photoid=190499&showall
shows correctly the camera data (Konica HEXAR RF) but says "Lens detail has not been set". But the lens details are also at the correct EXIF tag (LensMake=Voigtlander, LensModel=Super-Wide Heliar 15mm F4.5, LensInfo= 15 15 4.5 22). Doesn't the gallery software extract lens data too from the EXIF in the image? Or is lens data always a manual input?

Just to know, than I would adopt my RFF upload workflow.
Thanks for clarification.

Jorge: Could we please have the date of picture posting back in the browser ? The new gallery makes the weekly gallery picks now impossible. Or am I missing something ? Thanks.

Your comments are there. For example

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/rffgallery/showphoto.php?photoid=196595&showall=1

click on comments then commenst for me

nothing is mandatory.

Maybe I'm the odd man out here, but I think the new gallery looks terrible.

It seems a bit churlish to go critiquing it, when obviously a lot of work went in over the time leading up to today, but it could use a bit of layout tweaking. I'd certainly remove the target=blank tag from all the links at the top of the page: I can get by with one RFF page open at a time....

I do like the new layout suggested by the gallery: page looks cleaner. Fewer busy framing elements suits me.

A question: is the account upload limit going to change? 400k photos are nice, but will eat up even more account space.

If there is still a strong account limit on overall photo size, I'd prefer to hotlink to another photo service like Flickr. I regret having to delete photos with comments, to make room to upload new ones. It feels like history of the site and community is being deleted.

Are the manual inputted camera/lens/film data from the old gallery not transferable?

and... will a pic, if deleted in the new gallery, also be deleted in the old one?

Yeah, maybe. I'm a software developer so, I'm probably a little more critical than most when it comes to the layout of web pages and the impact that can have on user experience.

I'm a dev, too, so I know where you're coming from.... I plan on waiting for a request for feedback. There's no fee associated with the site, so I'm not about to sound like an unhappy customer.

I like the new layout. Especially the feature to check the last 7 days. To me at least, that seems to work better than the old one. I will have a lot more fun checking the gallery now I think.

Good work and thanks!

Gets getting used to!
I agree with GeorgeH that there is something inherently unbalanced with the web-page layout - difficult to put it into words but somehow it doesn't seem as friendly.

There is an inconsistency in returning to the New Gallery from an opened posted picture, and from an opened comment picture - in one case you 'close' the page, in the other you 'go back'.

Posting a picture seems to have three options, private, public, friend. I don't see the 'dotty box' for friend!

I don't know why very many people would really want to search for pictures taken with a particular lens or camera. RFF kept things simple, and I liked things that way.

Good idea to up the picture size although I haven't worked out what the effect will be in practice.

And I do appreciate that a lot of hard work has been done - great that it all seems to work so easily without any great crashes!

OK, I said I'd wait for feedback, but one thing that jumps out at me is the taxonomy of the database of lenses and cameras: it's sort of all over the place, and should probably get cleaned up before people bloat it with a kajillion inadvertent duplicates and format variations.

There are a ton of different "Leica M" categories in the lenses db, some lenses have the manufacturer leading off the name, versions are all indicated differently, size and f-stop are indicated differently...

Under cameras, there are separate entries for cameras as well as "camera company + scanner" combos. Scanners should have their own entries, not as cameras, I think: do I list a photo as a "Leica MP" or as "Leica - Perfection v700", because neither is optimal.

I only bring this up because it will get worse as time goes on: fixing things early is key. The search function won't work well without good rigor on the taxonomy.

Maybe I'm the odd man out here, but I think the new gallery looks terrible.

I'm not sure I would say 'terrible', but the cacophony of sizes is visually confusing - the original approach of scaling all the images to the same size thumbnail was better, in my opinion.

Without quoting all the above.

The database of lenses is managed by a site admin. I know Stephen is working on a comprehensive list which will be used eventually.

The camera list is self managed by users adding data to their uploaded pictures or from EXIF. Noritsu is the camera stored in the EXIF when someone gets their images scanned like at Costco or something like that.

Albums did NOT get migrated. You need to create new collections.

When you upload pictures, you can place them in a new collection by entering a new collection name or place them in an existing collection by selecting it from th elist of collections.

You can also batch edit and set multiple images at once into one or more collections. To do this make sure you hold the Ctrl key while selecting the different collections. This way you can add one photo to various collections/albums.

Not everyone will liek things but this is not a perfect world. So, it will just take getting use to.

posting pictures with 3 option. yes, there is a friend option. That has not been ported to RFF. But basically if it gets ported you can build a list of friends like a social site and the pictures which are uploaded as viewable by friends can only be seen by them.

To answer "I don't know why very many people would really want to search for pictures taken with a particular lens or camera". They actually do. :) But no one forces anyone to use this feature. To keep it simple, you can click on those tags in the exif data and see images matching the exif data. What if you wanted to see what a picture taken with a noctilux at .95 looked like? Well, you can here :)

Seeing pictures by 7 days or more is easy. and more options are available under the search. but if you want to see a picture with a specific age, just change the value in the url where it says photoage=7 change it to a specifi number of days.

How can you fin and album? albums are called collections here. You you are viewing a photo and the member has albums you will see see a drop list of albums for that member

for example

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/rffgallery/showphoto.php?photoid=196732&showall=1

You will see "Browse MP Guy's collections" on the right.

If you have albums collections, just click on "My Collections" from the Gallery menu

There is an effort to bring in camera and other info from th eold gallery. problem is that it has a very poor database design and requires a lout of scripting and manual work.

So, I created a collection in "edit collections" and then went to "my collections" where the new collection title appears but the big window says I don't have the privilege of viewing the collection. All I wanted to do was to begin grouping the images in collections. What did I do wrong?
